Press Reviews
Rodney Ronquillo – Distances Article by Jim Stoeber (February 2000) From the heart and soul of gifted composer/Rodney Ronquillo comes a brilliant and inspired new CD titled “Distances.” This collection of musical gems represents several years of compositional effort, and through the voices of several select vocalists (including his own), he expresses some of the feelings and experiences from his life. Rodney’s introduction to the world of music began at the age of four when he began taking piano lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada. Starting at this young age create a solid foundation for the musical life ahead of him. Years later after hearing an album by the band “Chicago”, Rodney’s classical interests began to diminish and the appeal of rock piano styles took over. He wrote his first composition at the age of thirteen, and this experience started a succession of song writing that has led to his wonderful new CD. Over the years, Rodney has developed a reputation as a session piano player, accompanying performers such as Cornilla Luna (from Toronto’s Miss Saigon), Leah Navarro, the Vision 2000 Christian music Ministry, and has worked on projects with producer James Dale (who has worked with Anne Murray and David Foster), and many others. Several years ago, Rodney started to build a personal recording studio, using computers, synthesizers and some of the latest digital equipment. Now a fully functional studio, not only did he record the Distances CD there, but many other Toronto friends, musicians and songwriters have used this facility for recording. Behind the heart of creativity also beats a heart for humanity. Multiculturalism is a topic most dear to Rodney’s heart; he has participated in various projects to help promote the end of racism. The new CD “Distances” is a mixture of styles, ranging from ballads and love songs to trendy R&B and upbeat A cappella. The intricate arrangements and intimate vocals easily draw the listener into the stories behind the lyrics. This new release is already getting airplay on several radio stations, and promising new opportunities are unfolding. There is a compilation CD being released this month titled Dreamscapes (the subject of a future Basta Pinoy News Article) featuring ten Filipino-Canadian acts in which Rodney was a key player in producing, and there are also other songwriting collaborations in progress. He has recently participated in the production of Winnipeg’s girl-group—Tegancat, with producer and good friend Jim Stoeber. Whichever project Rodney Ronquillo decides to take on, whether it be music, graphic design (in which he is also an expert), or anything else, we can be assured that it will always be top quality, for as in his songwriting he takes the utmost pride in everything he does and gives his best effort. This outlook can best be explained by using Rodney’s own words with some encouraging thoughts for aspiring musicians: “If you’ve always wanted something and you sincerely believe in it with all your heart and soul, then by all means go for it. Take as many steps as you need to get to your destination, become an explorer of your purposes, because your greatest dreams are the ones that never end.” |
