    Artist History
Prof. Jannasch, organist for the Dutch Reformed Mother Church from 1887 to 1930, and his pupil and successor, prof. Gawie Cillié, laid the foundations for a permanent choir tradition in Stellenbosch. With the parting of the congregation Stellenbosch-Central in 1959, this tradition was continued with the founding of a choir consisting of students by Chris Swanepoel. This congregation would later give birth to what is today known as the Students' Church. Pieter H van der Westhuizen followed Swanepoel in 1965 as organist and choir leader of the congregation. He held this position for 25 year - until 1990 - after which Anton Els filled the post up to 1995. The current conductor, Louis van der Watt, has been with the choir and congregation since 1996. Through the years the choir has achieved many successes, and - especially due to the students being the composition of it - have attained a special and beloved character. This is still the only church choir that is permanently attached to a student congregation, and one of only a handful of church choirs that give regular concert performances, especially with an orchestra.
