Press Reviews
SHORT CUTZ. March, 1992HEDGEHOG "YOUHAPPYFACE" CD It's great to hear a band that's genuinely into what they're playing, and you won't hear many more into it than Hedgehog. The three-piece unit out of the Santa Cruz mountains play hard, explosive rock with amazing musicianship, complex rhythms and time changes that sound like how Rush would if they were a hardcore band, or possibly Prong minus the New Yawk 'tude. Actually, neither of those comparisons nail Hedgehog. Mike Schmiedt's bass pops along under the harsh, throaty vocals of Eddie Gregor, who also plays a mean six-string. On "Curtains", Andrew Orci plays some tribal beats that just freak me out (meaning in a good way). These guys play so hard, you can almost smell the sweat pouring off 'em. With long, played-out songs and deeply obscure lyrics, this is definitely a different kind of 'core from the norm - volatile and highly recommended. OPTION #44. May/June, 1992HEDGEHOG "YOUHAPPYFACE" CD The first full album from this Santa Cruz trio offers some of the most musical rage I've ever heard. They admit to jazz and hardcore influences -- I hear some Sabbath riffs, too -- which means they can actually play fast and furiously, instead of play at playing fast and furiously. -Michael Davis FLIPSIDE. May/June, 1991HEDGEHOG "PJD 029" (5-song cassette) A weird hybrid (musically) of Rudimentary Peni and Rush. Progressive man meet pissed-off hardcore man. Now shake hands. Wow! Some Primus here and there. Instrumentally, they are marvels. "Utility Dig" is insanity personified. This band is nuts. -Cake |
