Artist History
Coathanger started as a basement band consisting of Shaggy (David Maphis) and Thaiman (Tony Aitken) in the late 70's, barely able toplay our instruments and recording on a junky Radio Shack mono cassette recorder. Our songs began a source of venting our frustrations after a school day. Anythinggoes, and anyone was a target. Chris Converse was our first "singer", with a fewsit-ins by the infamous Bill Cook. Shaggy had another band, which played rock-n-rolland southern rock. Coathanger was always just a way to have fun. Eventully,Thaiman began to develop some cool guitar progressions and coined our first mainstaysong "SLAM!", a song about slam dancing and skateboarding, in 1979. In1983 - 1984, Shaggy got sent to boarding school and the afterschool jams got thrawted. In 1984, after Shaggy got out of boarding school, we began to play again. We bothmoved into a house in College Park, MD and began to collabourate on some newmaterial. We spent a lot of our time phoning into the local college radio station(WMUC) and playing live over the phone and engaging in totally senseless ramblingsof comedy (Pre-Jerky Boys). The construction of the Ceder Crest skate ramp in Centreville, Virginia in 1985 was thepivitol point for our band. It was at this time that Thaiman and myself (Shaggy) werereunited with a friend from our early years of skateboarding, Pat Clark. Add in themetallic stylings of Marty Cunningham and there you have our first public lineup.Wepracticed about one time before our first show in Shaggy's room in his group house.Yes, they did call the police, but we had already completed our mission. (by the wayVernon Vougt, you are very gay for calling the cops.) |
