Artist History
It is not often a musician debating whether or not to pursue a solo career comes across someone so talented and raw that the decision to collaborate is made so easily. The first meeting between Jessica Porter and Matt Kaner proved to be such an event. Jessica had moved out to California from Chicago after a stint on the first season of American Idol (almost making it to the final 32 contestants!) As fate had it, Jessica was dragged out by her roommates on a night she was not feeling well, and which also happened to be Matt’s birthday. She ventured to his house, only to find herself in the comfort of her voice and a guitar in her arms. Matt walked into the room, a feeling of amazement struck him, and he pursued the situation. Asking Jessica what she was doing, she replied, “I’m just playing some music, not really into the party scene tonight.” Immediately, Matt saw this as an opportunity to showcase some of the songs he had written over the past year. The second Matt started playing, Jessica’s angelic voice began vocal arrangements and harmonies over the guitar that only an angel herself would be capable of delivering. Within the course of that night, Jessica and Matt were able to complete five songs and create a stir in the crowd at the party that kept the streets of Isla Vista talking for some time to come. The duo knew they had to pursue this. Three weeks later Jessica and Matt walked into their first live performance together at Java Jones in Isla Vista. The duo was so well received that they were offered the showcase slot at the Open Mic only a month later. A band name had to be found. A friend of Jessica and Matt offered “The Fates” as a viable name that tied the situation between Jessica and Matt’s first meeting as well as something catchy. Matt thought long and hard about it, and derived it to “The Fated”. The name stuck. Only 7 months later The Fated have played at such venues as The Coach House, Java Jones, The Cold Spring Tavern, Dargan’s, 14 Below, Kulak’s Woodshed, and Rock’s |
