Artist History
The Life & Times of Vann DeLorey Singer songwriter, Vann Delorey was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick October 23rd 1963. First born son of a career diplomat with Canadian external affairs, he spent his first 17 years travelling. He has lived in Tokyo-Japan, Dar es Salaam-Tanzania, Islamabad-Pakistan, Tel Aviv-Israel, Cairo-Egypt and Guatemala City-Guatemala. Vann returned to Fredericton in 1982 to start university. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1987 from St-Thomas University. Music has always been omnipresent in Vann's world. His father was lead singer in a popular maritime band at the time of Vann's birth. Under the weight of his new responsibilities, he put aside his professional music career and found a job with the Canadian Government. Two years later, the young family was relocated to Japan where Vann's brother Darren was born. Even though Vann's father no longer played for his bread and butter, he never missed a chance to play for family and friends at diplomatic parties and family reunions. Vann's first toy was an old turntable he received at tha age of 1-1/2. Playing his fathers 45's and singing along quickly became an amusement of choice in the Delorey's TV less household. Vann received his first guitar, a hand me down from his father, at the age of 13 (the guitar was destroyed in 1986 at a particularly rowdy university kitchen party which Vann denies all memory of or participation in). He learned to play by ear playing along with his father, relatives, friends and records. It was only at the age of 17 that Vann started to develope his trademark voice when he realized the girls liked it as much or more than if he was a star high school quarterback. From that time on, he was hooked and has never stopped singing and picking. Vann formed his first band Ebony Crozz in Ottawa in 1980. He took a year out of highschool and lived on Sparks street playing for whatever he got. From 1982 to 1987, Vann was the undisputed kitchen party king of Fredericton. No party was worth a mention without Vann and his guitar... and there were a lot of parties... In 1987, diploma in pocket, Vann moved to Montreal where he expected instant acclaim with his group The Echoes, and yes, they were acclaimed by the neighbors of their practice room in a basement on Mont Royal. A cassette of original music and many empty beer cases is all that remains of The Echoes which disbanded in 1990, three days after the release of their debut cassette. In 1990, Vann decided to reorient his career: sales, door to door sales of his Echoes cassette. In 1991, Vann moved to St-Severin de Beauce to live in the beautiful brown country house he shares with his mistress and love children. He currently plays over 150 shows a year across Quebec and New Brunswick with his partner, percussioniste, guitarist, composer, and younger brother, Darren. Together, Vann and Darren haved formed an intense amalgam of styles and influences that is the envy of their peers. A voice distinctive in its soul and energy, an acoustic guitar battered and worn with years of manic assault and tender caress. Drums played with the energy and drive of the rock greats. A marriage of heart, mind, soul and attitude, which has to be seen and heard by all true music lovers. In 1996, to appease the appetite of his growing legion of fans, Vann released his first CD - LUCKY 13 - . The album was recorded live in a smoky beauceron bar with friends Stephane Rancourt on drums, Pierre Grenier and Eric Maheu on bass, Dan Robichaud on harmonica, and is a simple driving party album, high energy, high humour and «a good time was had by all» type of album. Since the June 7th 1996 album release Vann has performed 400+ shows in support of the LUCKY 13 album. During this same time, Vann was in the studio les Productions de la Sphère to record his next album . The new album Full Cool is finally done and will be released on June 17th 1999 at a huge party and show at the Hotel National in Tring-Jonction. Full Cool consists of 10 original tunes produced by Vann Delorey and Stephane Rancourt and highlights Vanns distinctive vocal and guitar work as well as the drumming talents of Stephane Rancourt, and Bass talents of Pierre Grenier . What does it sound like?! Full Cool is essentially Rock and roll with large dollops of country, rap, blues, psychedelic, and world beat, spices depending on what song you listen to. It is a mature and confident album that bridles with the intensity and spontaneity of Vann's live performances. Listen for yourself and tell us what it sounds like. It sounds simply Full Cool! |
