    Press Reviews
Stephen Lynch has a simple, but seemingly infallible, formula: write sick, twisted song lyrics, then sing them in an angelic voice with sensitive-folkie acoustic-guitar accompaniments. "We've never hugged, we've never kissed / I've never been intimate with your fist" is an inherently amusing couplet, but sung as a sappy love song, it's over the top. The 29-year-old, New York-based Lynch leads with the album's best embodiment of this formula, "Lullaby (The Divorce Song)," which starts sweetly and innocently, but eventually features such lines as "Daddy likes rubbing against little boys on the bus / I think that's why your mommy left us." Other songs' topics include brain damage, being born with only one gonad, necrophilia, priestly lust, anal insertion of gerbils, celebrity stalking, incest, hermaphrodites, strippers, and a sincere tribute to the Muppets. Edgy comic actor Jay Mohr has three short cameos doing his Christopher Walken imitation, commenting on the songs. The cognitive dissonance between the lyrics' sentiments and the musical presentation is strong enough that even on repeated listens, the effect doesn't wear off. This CD is an instant comedy classic.Steve HoltjeCDNOW Senior Editor, Comedy/Spoken WordNovember 6, 2000
