Artist History
In December of 1997 Rob Hamrick met bass player Chris Boughter through an ad that he had placed in a Cincinnati paper. Chris immediately enlisted drummer Chad Wehrman to join the new group. The group began writing songs together and began recording at Audioasis with engineer/co-producer Jeff Higgins. John Yates mixed the record at Dreamland studio in New York. Mahoola's approach to songwritng is to start with a catchy melody over some basic chords that one could play and sing with just a guitar or piano. Then the bass and drum parts are added to define a feel and help fully develop the mood of the song. Mahoola's strategy on their debut release was to limit over-dubs and keep to a 3-piece sound that translates perfectly to the stage. The band's modern pop rock sound is original but also familiar and catchy. Mahoola is currently concentrating on live shows to promote the CD regionally. |

Press Reviews
FROM CINCINNATI CITY BEAT:The trio is the latest project from localModern Rock vet Rob Hamrick, who previouslyled the popular Sleep Theatre. (Sleep Theatrereleased three full-length recordings the lastof which was distributed by Relativity, werefeatured on a CMJ Certain Damage and a TDKcompilation. The band built a devoted followingdue to their constant touring, airplay, andpositive press.) For those of us who have heardHamrick's previous bands, it's been refreshingto watch the singer/guitarist develop over theyears. While for most musicians 'maturing'musically usually means mellowing out or losingspark, Hamrick gets more adventurous andaggressive as he progresses. Mahoola's nine-songdebut is highlighted by raggedly catchy songsthat go from the heaviness of 'Won't Go Astray'and the expansive, rugged jangle of 'Up For Air,'to the quirky trippiness of 'Surround Me' and theswaggering free fall of 'Predictable.' The banddoes a great job of being consistent but notrepetitive, never falling into the rut so manyother bands do. Hamrick's voice -one of the mostidentifiable in Cincinnati rock circles- onceagain manages to give the album its cohesiveness, guiding the band with vocals that both soar andbite.By: Mike Breen |
