    Artist description
Soulful vocals, heavy guitars, driving groove and probing lyrics about a persons life coming apart and their struggle to hold on. These are the elements that drive the most recent album by ASTRID. It's a record that is loaded with guitar-driven melodic rock tunes and emotionally charged vocals. The vocals are gutsy and powerful. The production by veteran producer Chris Tsangarides (Concrete Blonde, The Tragically Hip, Sara Craig, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Thin Lizzy, Y&T, Depeche Mode) is impeccable. All summed up, the guitars bite; the grooves pump; hooks are large; lyrics are sharp and sincere. ASTRID is a storyteller whose lyrics focus mainly on personal relationships, and she delivers her lines with power while maintaining a certain intimacy. This album builds momentum from the strong vocal delivery of ASTRID, who not only sings these songs but also “bites into them”. ASTRID describes the romantically combative "Blue", whose chorus is highlighted by the lines “Blue, I'm so blue every night by myself, but I'm too tired to bid you farewell and I've gone crazy here thinking about you”, as a song about how “I was stuck in a relationship with a person who I loved and hated all at once, but in a strange way I grew to like it and got comfortable with it.” “I usually get my best ideas when I'm walking alone at night," responds ASTRID when asked about her songwriting approach. “Something about the solitude”, she adds. The character on this impressive album compellingly wrestles with ghosts and demons, and while its not clear if she'll win her battles, you root for her throughout the album. The person who inhabits these songs is bruised ("spinning out of control in my hell," from "Blue"), but she’s proud, too ("yeah, my world may be crazy but that’s alright, just as long as I’m happy ‘cause it’s my life" from "It’s My Life"). She’s dealing with busted-up romances ("No word from you makes the truth painfully clear, Soft echoes of our laughter are erased by the strength of our tears," from "Near"), insecurities ("Fighting all the fear that ensues all the hurt, Fighting all the issues of distrust and low self-worth," from "Day In Nowhere") and fears ("I need a place to run to but You're everywhere I go I need a friend to turn to when the pain has all control," from "Give Me Shelter"). ASTRID, who was born and raised in Queens, New York and later, settled as a teenager in the southeast, honed her songwriting abilities while fronting in a variety of local bands in her high school years. In addition, having worked early in her career with Jon Secada, she later developed her overwhelming vocal strength while singing backup on the road for artists like Jimmy Buffet and doing session work for Soul Asylum. Her rich Colombian roots and multi-lingual abilities have also afforded her the opportunity to work with Venezuelan pop artist Karina, and recently singer/actor Chayanne. While doing backing vocal session work and enjoying the local scene, playing acoustic shows and performing in clubs as a featured singer/songwriter ASTRID was introduced to veteran producer Chris Tsangarides. He saw “something” in this artist and approached her about making a record. Through ASTRID’S emotive lyrics and Chris’s musical vision this collaboration proved to be a match made in heaven. This instinctive union of singer/songwriter and producer is a reminder of what can be achieved when musicians never lose sight of the fact that the song is the most important thing. "While writing and performing this record I think we just got up there and just tried to honestly as I could convey the songs as energetically and heartfelt as possible," says ASTRID. "These are my songs and I really feel good about them. We didn’t try to put any dramatics into it, we're just talking to people, telling a story. To me, we were just recording the songs and losing ourselves in them. It's like if you come to a rehearsal or live show, you're going to hear the same thing as you hear on the record." Summing it all up, in an age of sometimes dark and often angst-ridden musical emptiness, ASTRID breaks the mold with sentimental, yet never sappy, emotion. It was just a matter of time before a new artist combined simple melodies with heart-felt lyrical integrity. After hearing the album, the listener is left with a distinct feeling of having visited the many and varied portholes of ASTRID’S psyche. From the suffocated voice in “Blue” to the tear induced realization of “Near” ASTRID conveys her album with the complexities and expanse of an art gallery - displaying a full body of work. Overall, this album is an impressive celebration of the human spirit. ASTRID'S vocal strength and emotional power are both universally compelling.
