Artist description
Stephen Dei (pronounced Day), a Pittsburgh native who began his musical endeavors early in life. As early as age four he was to be found playing a relative's old drum set in his grandmother's attic. Day in day out, the awkwardly enchanting beating of drums could be heard echoing out the windows into the larger neighborhood. Eventually, even at this young age, passers by began to take notice.
As the story goes, it was a typical afternoon in this city suburb. A neighbor of Dei's grandmother, and occasional ringleader of a local garage band, found himself out for a stroll. Thoughts of this bandleaders' musical future weighed heavy on his mind. In the weeks just past the set player of his ensemble had unexpectedly left the group. Not knowing where a replacement could be found, the gentleman heard hope in the distant echo of the drum. As he approached the house from which the beats emanated his excitement grew, little could he know, however, that he was courting assistance of a musician not yet to see the ripe age of 5. Dei at this time was not quite ready to join the local ensemble, but the beginnings of the mark that he was to leave on the musical trade had already been made evident.
By 13, Stephen began work with a jazz-fusion band. Here his impeccable feel and mesmerizing polyrhythms quickly stood out. Months passed to years and Dei moved on from both the group and the drum set to take on a variety of instruments with various jazz and experimental rock ensembles. Ultimately unsatisfied with these pursuits, Dei moved on once again. Armed with the belief that his contribution to music lay in song writing and surround by a room full of instruments in the Fall of 2001 Dei began work on songs that would eventually appear on his debut solo release "Out With the In Crowd." Eclectic and purposeful, Dei attempts to constantly reinvent himself. His music combines pop sensibility with a soulful blend of jazz, rock, and r&b. Stephen Dei is a definitive, young voice in the next generation of pop music.
