Artist History
London-based rock band fronted by the powerful presence of Ali De Siati (former MTV VJ). Mother of Pearl have been active for the last couple of years, gigging intensely in the UK, Ireland and the US.
In the year 2001 they self-produced their first EP (Mother of Pearl), which got a great deal of attention from the press and media. In the same year they got to play several important venues like the Point Depot (supporting Aslan) in Dublin and The Electric Ballroom in London.
In the year 2002 Mother of Pearl were nominated one of the best 5 newcomers of the year by HotPress/Bacardi and played a showcase at Vicar Street (Dublin), where they were acclaimed by Noel Redding (former bassist in the Jimi Hendrix’ Experience) as one of the “hottest new band on the market”. The track “Borders” was also nominated among the best 8 tracks of the year by Hotpress/Bacardi and received national airplay in Ireland.
In the summer of 2002 Mother of Pearl recorded their second self-produced EP (Volume) for the American Industry. The band played a showcase tour in New York in July 02 in venues like the CBGBs and Arlene’s Grocery, after which they were taken on board by Nick Caris at The Agency Group NY. In October 2002 Mother of Pearl were flown back to the United States for a second showcase tour sponsored by The Agency Group.
Mother of Pearl’s music has received airplay on many radio stations: SBN radio (England), Music Choice (All of Europe), FM104, 2FM, Today FM, Galway Bay FM (Ireland), KINK FM and VPRO 3 voor 12 (Netherlands), DMX Radio (LA, USA), Novaradio (Florence, Italy).
The band keeps gigging constantly and working on new material.
Catch them live if you can.

"STATESIDE CUTS"
The latest rock happenings in the USA
By Hal B. Selzer
Making their way around the East Coast recently were the London based Mother Of Pearl. The group originally hails from Italy, and is fronted by sexy diva Ali De Siati. She is joined by guitaris/programmer Marco Schnabl. "We've known each other for a long time, we grew up together," explains Ali. "We all played in different bands and one day I just decided to put this project together with the best musicians I knew. That's how the band started a few years ago. We've gone through a few line-up changes, but Mother of Pearl as you see them today have been alive and kicking for the last couple of years." Earlier in the year Mother of Pearl were nominated one of the top five newcomers of the year by HotPress/Bacardi. The track "Borders" was also nominated among the top eight tracks of the year by Hotpress/Bacardi and received extensive airplay in Ireland. In the summer of 2002, Mother of Pearl recorded their second self-produced EP, “Volume”, for the American tour.
Ali cites a wide range of influences, although live the band has a heavier feel than most of the bands she talked about, which includes U2, Peter Gabriel, and Pink Floyd. “It's new rock” she says. “It's a combination of good old played rock with new technologic sounds in it. We use a sampler live. Marco is also an excellent programmer, so we spend quite a long time on combining the technologic bits to the played-live music.
The group relocated to London to try and gain wider exposure. "We come from Italy originally, and we had problems advancing with our music there because I've always written my lyrics in English”, Ali says. "We had been thinking about moving for a while. I started working for MTV in London and we all decided it was a good time to get out of Italy."
The reaction was so good in the United States that the band is thinking of making New York their home "Absolutely great," gushes Ali. "We love the States and the connection with the crowd is just magic. We are planning to move there soon as we're now working with The Agency Group in New York City."
Mother Of Pearl played a number of area venues, but the legendary CBGB's was their favourite. "They're all amazing, but we have to admit tha CBGB's is a magic venue," Ali says. “We love The Arlene's Grocery and The Chance Theatre, too." RI-RA MAGAZINE
Having taken a chance on the support band at the recent Aslan gig in Camden I and a few more early birds were generously rewarded with a taste of one of London’s most exciting up and coming live acts.
Mother of Pearl are an Italian three piece rock combo currently on both sides of the Irish sea, and are soon to take America by storm with a two week tour kicking off at the New York’s famous CBGB’s.
Fronted by the charismatic Ali De Siati with Marco Schnabl on guitar and P Cuscito on drums their sound crosses the spectrum of rock from very heavy off the Richter scale stuff to the more sentimental rock ballad. With the ability to adapt, their live show has captured audiences in venues as grand as The Point in Dublin (again in support of Aslan) and as intimate as the Kashmir Klub in London.
They are no strangers to the music press either with various articles appearing in recent issues of HotPress and Making Music Magazine, who were highly impressed by the band’s debut EP calling it “Demo of the month”.
Mother of Pearl gig regularly in Britain and Ireland and are on a steadfast route towards major success. So my advice is catch them now, before the bigger arenas do. For further information on live dates and their self produced six track EP aptly titled “Mother of Pearl” log onto their website at www.mother-of-pearl.co.uk.
MAKING MUSIC WEB DEMONOLOGY
March 2002
As soon as Web Demonology opens the envelope containing Mother of Pearl’s submission, it’s clear that they mean business. With the most professional biog and notes l’ve ever seen in a demo, MoP also have some soaring, brilliantly-structured pop to back it all up.
Granted, the fact that they are fronted by a vocalist already known in another field - Italian MTV VJ Alessandra De Siati – is imrnediately going to attract the column inches, but she is also a damn fine singer. There's nothing vaultingly ambitious or devastatingly original about this music, but it's also melodic pop strong enough to mean Mother of Pearl could easlly be holding up the Radio 2 playlist a year from now.
BACARDI HOTPRESS
PLUGGED BAND OF THE YEAR COMPETITION Dolan’s Warehouse, Limerick
First out of the traps were 3-piece MOTHER OF PEARL who hit the
ground running with a hard-edged opening number. Apart from the shades-wearing, cool-as ice guitar player their secret weapon was a female singer with a truly powerful voice that recalled Janis Joplin in her prime. The songs were in the main riff-driven and memorable but it was undoubtedly that voice that impressed most.
PEARL'S SINGER (HotPress, 2001)
Fronted by the curly-haired Italian MTV Vee-Jay Alessandra De Siati, the London based rock band MotherOfPearl have scheduled an appearance supporting Aslan in the Point on December 27th. “We’ve supported them a few times” explains Ali. “We first met them when we played with them at Boggarts in Galway. It was fantastic! Something clicked so they asked us to perform at the Point with them which was absolutely amazing. We said yes, naturally, straight away.”
Ali (as she is called for short) also has a place in her heart for the Irish audience. “They’re very much like the Italian audiences; they’re very passionate. They dance, they sing, they scream and they just have fun. It’s wonderful.”
A self confessed mixture of good old raw rock’n roll and melody, Mother of Pearl have just independently released their self titled EP, still combing the sand in search for a label. The pending release of their first single in the New Year and the upcoming accompanying video aren’t set for A list spins on MTV, Ali assures me, despite her obvious network connections:
“What can I say is that we have a few gigs coming up and around Europe and we’re supporting the Fun Lovin’ Criminals at the Underworld in London on the 10th of January, so it’s all go!”

GONG WARFARE (HotPress 2001)
U2 are up for four gongs at the 2001 MTV Europe Music Awards which take place in Frankfurt on November 5th.
The categories they’ve been nominated in are ‘Best Group’, ‘Best Album’, ‘Best Rock Act’, and ‘Best Web Site’. Also likely to be thanking Mum, dad and God are sextuple-nominees Gorillaz, and the thrice-shortlisted Craig David and Limp Bizkit.
Airing live on the satellite channel from 9pm, the celebrity presenters include Ali G, Emma Bunton, Nelly Furtado, Kelis, Kylie, Gavin Rossdale, Roger Sanchez and our very own Ronan Keating.
Talking of MTV, one of their Italian VJs, Alessandra De Siati, can currently be found fronting Louth-based combo Mother Of Pearl.
Armed with their debut five-tracker, the trio visit Eamonn Doran’s, Dublin (October 23rd); Galway Bay FM Drive-Time Show (24th @5pm); and Cuba, Galway (24th @8pm).
Imagine if U2 were fronted by Polly Harvey, and you’ve some idea of the inspired racket they make.
