Press Reviews
"Jagged Doctrine's second full length album Welcome to the Playground caught me off guard in more ways than one. I hadn't heard any news from the band in almost a year and was completely unaware that new material was in the works. So when I found them on mp3.com while scanning through the industrial section, I was quite surprised and immediately bought the CD. And what a score it turned out to be. From the highway cruising heavy riffs of "Down" to the ingenious Egyptian-flavoured trance of "He's Coming", the gangsta rapcore of "Welcome to the Playground" and over to the speedy hypnotic rave / guitar battle of "Undecided", there is a lot to like on this varied CD. Vocal deliveries, typically slightly distorted, are much improved from the first album, resulting in catchier and more memorable styles. For example, "Skin Doctors" is a fun, singalongable song about the plastic surgery craze. I also like the band's attention to detail from the Darth Vader-breathing effect on "Down" to the 80's breakdance whisp on "Welcome to the Playground". They are small things but they really do enhance the whole listening experience. ... In any case, if you like heavy guitars mixed with techno, industrial and touches of funk, rap and trance, you can't lose with Jagged Doctrine." -- By Richard Maaranen, Ballistic Test Zine |
