    Artist History
hailing from malaysia, grim was first incarnated as elizabeth arden somewhere around february 1996 in malaysia by two IKATAN students from the ashes of churnin' wastebasket, a crappy noise-only band that had spawned two demos back in 1995. the first line-up consisted of zaihas amrizad on vocals and guitars and brandon hoe on drums. this line-up was intact for roughly 6 months. during that time length, it managed to release a DIY demo entitled big doll house in march 1996. the demo was literally tape recorded due to the obvious lack of cash. nevertheless, the demo received good reviews in the premier malaysian underground newspage then, the blasting concept. after their debut gig and only in august 4th 1996, bear (then of weird-grindcore band infectious maggots) joined in as the band's bassist, only to survive brandon's departure to the USA. thus sham (of the punk band the splatters) were recruited as the new drummer. andy and ken (koffin kanser, spiral kinetic circus) were dragged in to play guitars. zaihas decided to do only the vocals. december 1996. the line-up split. zaihas was forced to do most of the work on the band alone. this resulted in the twin release of the demos the book and devilplot in february 1997. both received critical acclaim in the very page that had earlier on reviewed big doll house. may 1997. another demo was released. it was named sutra, marking the band's deeper foray into psychedelic and mystical realms. again, the demo was gratefully gulped and swallowed by the malaysian underground community right after yet another rave review in the blasting concept. june to july 1997. zaihas was busy teaming up with eddie (of the locally famous malaysian industrial band marlinspike) writing and recording songs in order to polish elizabeth arden's sound and direction.august 6th 1997. zaihas flew over to the USA to continue his studies. the band's name was changed to elizabeth. neil allen delury was roped in as the bassist. neil and zaihas joined rob (drums), mike (guitars), and charlie (guitars) to form 3/4pl8. zaihas left soon after due to personal reasons.elizabeth was revitalized. may 1998, demo reaper redeemer was released.november 1998. demo valhalla of scopeless sentiment was released. akin yesilkaya helped with some keyboards and programming. the demo received fair reviews from gabriel lilliehook's GL-production doom metal homepage. early 1999. grim was formed. with help from rizal (mandatory, frackture klimax, blind tribe) and affan, grim's sound and direction were polished. grim ep was recorded with affan as engineer and producer. zaihas went back to malaysia.

"Valhalla of Scopeless Sentiment(US)- This is a one man project hailing from Indianapolis US. A guy named Zaihas Amrizad Hasfar had pieced together this one and it includes 6 tracks. Akin Yesilkaya has helped out with the drum machine and keyboards, but 99% is done by Zaihas. The 6 tracks is variating I would say from early Sabbath feel to more blackmetal orientated stuff along with some soulful stuff. Personally I have a hard time with the black metal influences, that is mostly the vocals where Zaihas shifting from normal Ozzy inspirations to Screaming. Overall despite the vocal sound I have to point out that the music is pretty good but its done on a drum machine that leaves the sound almost thin. According to Zaihas he is piecing together a band right now and the sound of the next recording will be a lot heavier with real drums and everything else. Elizabeth shows promise anyway..." "...ELIZABETH ARDEN - Sutra...Prolific one-man band Elizabeth Arden (Zaihas Amrizad) returns with another 10 songs, all recorded alone at his home in Kajang. As suggested by the title, this is a more psychedelic offering. The second track Sutra/Karma utilises a crude sampling of George Harrison's sitar-twisting Within You, Without You! One of the many sparse highlights is the ballad Cute Huggy Bear, all flying melodies and Brit-poppish simplicity. Samsara brings the mode closer to Syd Barrett's area of musical tripping while Gone With Peace is a bit like Irish folk. My prediction for a hit single is Rocketchair, another simplistic ditty, but this time, the chorus sticks hard to the head. Sutra proves that Zaihas is really a talented songwriter. The recording is rather crude (with just a guy playing acoustic guitar and singing his own songs), but the tunes are really something else. Check it out. - Joe Kidd, the Blasting Concept..."Malaysians has always been great supporters and lovers of rock music. This should be the right time for world wide recognitions for all innovative Asian artists. Grim, a one-man band show great international quality on this industrial tune! Heavy!!" -Asian That Rocks Cool station
