    Artist description
Flat Cat is a Linn County, IA based band that has been together since 1995. Playing a distinctive musical stew of R&B, blues, soul, jazz and some good ole rock n’ roll, Flat Cat has built up a strong following throughout Eastern Iowa by consistently producing high energy, diverse musical sets. Legendary for their long, fiery performances, the band is known as the hardest working band in Eastern Iowa. Flat Cat was voted “Best Band in Cedar Rapids” in a reader’s survey published by Icon Magazine’s Best Of Iowa City & Cedar Rapids 1999 issue. Flat Cat has been fortunate to share the stage with some great players laying down the music we all love so much, Lonnie Brooks, Joanna Connor, Merl Saunders, Chubby Carrier, America and many more.

    Artist History
Flat Cat grew out of acoustic jam sessions around full moon campfires. A more funky groove evolved as we experimented with electricity.

    Press Reviews
"Confirming Iowa's lead position in the "How Many Blues Records Can We Make?" category, Iowa Blues V (Hot Fudge Music)is a compilation of regional bands. Perhaps soybeans and corn will yield to blues records as the states leading index in the states gross production tables. Best Cuts: Patrick Hazell's manic piano pounding "Ain't Been the First Time" with punk rock vocals over a jump boogie rhythm and Flat Cat's semi-psychedelic "Mama's Song" with weird harmony guitar licks, doubled vocals and nice organ work by Tom Giblin" Ed Ivey, June 1999 Blues Revue "Yearning for some Southern-fried soul? Lack of gumbo got you down? Longing for some deep dish Chicago-style blues? Linn County's Flat Cat has got the meal to cure your ills. The band's new live CD, Bring A Friend (Indian Creeke Records), opens with the greasy slide guitar of Jeff Reeder on a faithful cover of Dan Penn's "Memphis Women and Fried Chicken." The song also offers generous sides of fatback groove and finger lickin' drumming. At times recalling the flavor and feel of Tony Joe White("Poke Salad Annie"), it's enough to make you want to fry up a bird of your own.The album was recorded live over two nights at J.M. O'Malley's Pub and Eatery in Cedar Rapids--a tiny neighborhood bar that has been a flavor-savior of authentic Chicago blues, Memphis soul stew and New Orleans gumbo ya-ya for years. Boasting amazing musical diversity and spiced with a solid sound throughout, the album is a smorgasbord of the too-often overlooked stew-pot of talent in the Cedar Rapids area--and easily the most competent and fun live recording that I've tasted for a long time. The band serves up Chef Bader's original dishes of alligator stew ("Can't Get To Heaven"), big city late-night salad ("Wages of Sin"), Jamaican jerky treats ("I Cried") and the still bloody sirloin steak ("Twenty Years")--in addition to more traditional fare like pulled-pork sanwiches ("Follow Your Heart"), five alarm chili ("This Devil In Me"), gumbo ("Hey Pocky-Way"), red beans and rice (Allen Toussaint's "Hang Tough") and shrimp fahitas (Santana's "Soul Sacrifice"). Whatever dish you choose, wash it down with a cherry ginger ale (Chuck Berry's "C'est La Vie") All and all, Flat Cat lays out a good spread.(Joe Derderian)Music Editor Nov. 2000 ICON
