Artist description
Brett Staggs got his ticket into this life one year before the 80’s hit San Francisco. Unfortunately, he had to say goodbye to the West Coast at a young age to head east, but until this day he still feels like a Californian, which is hard to pull off in a city like Pittsburgh, Pa. As a result of dad’s job moving Brett, his mother, sister, and brother from California to Pennsylvania to Kansas City and back to Pennsylvania, Brett inevitably found a knack for making friends in all his locations, and that was by playing music. “Everybody wants to play in a band, and you can make the best friends by playing music with them.” So like a Johnny Appleseed of rock-n-roll, punk, hardcore, and hip-hop, he went from town to town, starting bands and writing songs and making friends, playing any instrument necessary to make it work and stuffing under his belt all the different styles and vibes of each town. Finally, settling down for the time being in Pittsburgh, Brett is for the first time in his 23 years playing anthemic, melodious acoustic music all by his lonesome. “It’s wild because I still expect to turn around and see a drummer or a bassist or something, but it’s just me, it makes me work harder, which is good.” Running the gamut on musical tastes from The Clash to Beastie Boys to Nick Drake, Brett follows no rules musically, only what sounds good, and more importantly, what feels good. Cutting his teeth on the solo scene at open mic night’s all over the city, Brett rooted through his 30 song repertoire to find the songs that worked live and headed for the studio to record a few of them for a demo. “Recording is a funny thing because you love the process but hate the final product because all your insecurities surface and you can’t see past them, but you just gotta live with it and push it as far as it’ll go, cuz that’s all you got to show for yourself.” The “electric heart” demo should be out early July and Brett will be playing out as much as possible to see if he can make friends with himself as a one-man band and hopefully make friends with audiences wherever he plays. Hope to see you at a show. |
