    Artist History
A Casual Recounting of Our Subterranean Origins by Marlon Matthew, the guy who plays drums During the summer of 2000, Andy and I had to put our band Catalyst to death because our guitarist Jose left to go study music at Berklee College in Boston. Andy and I made a pact to stay together and continue writing material. We also jammed with other buddies in hopes of finding a new guitarist that was good for the job. I had jammed with Karl a few times for fun and as you might guess, it happened to be a lot of fun. I mentioned this to Andy and eventually, spring of 2002, we all got together and jammed. We struggled to find time or a place to practice because we didn’t have a studio at the time. Andy and I finally got our shit together that summer and rented a room at Superior Sound in El Cajon for a few months. This was when we starting writing our first few songs. At the time, we were interested in the idea of adding another guitarist to the band. Our friend Steve Wilson (of Waveless Dave and the No-Boreds) jammed with us on a whim. Karl wanted to name the band The Horses, Andy wanted to name it Subterranean, Steve wanted to name it The Great Unknown, and I didn’t give a fuck what our band name was. One night Karl and I went out to a show with our friend Jordan and we were telling him about how we couldn’t agree on a band name. Jordan, as clever as he is, suggested that we combine all the names into one big name. I immediately spewed the words "Subterranean Horses of the Impending Unknown" from my mouth, and after a few minutes Karl and I knew this was going to be our name. We played a few of Steve’s songs and we played a few of ours and after a month or so we all mutually decided to go back to just having Karl play guitar. Andy heard through a friend about a vocalist named Dave Buck (Davit) who was available. We had three instrumentals recorded on tape so we gave that to Dave. Soon enough Dave came to practice one day with lyrics prepared for all three songs. He was pretty much already in the band when that happened. Eventually, Andy and I couldn’t afford paying rent for the rehearsal studio anymore, so the band was put on hold. We found a new home at Nestor Studios by the time 2003 rolled around. Ever since then we have been rocking on a steady basis and learning/writing new songs. We played our first two shows in the month of March, and by this time we decided that the name Subterranean Horses is a little better.
