Artist History
Tripping Billy have been on the scene for two years and are only now starting to define their styleof music thanks to the intriduction of new violinist Timon. Influence of Dave Matthews Band, Radiohead, Bach, Sons of Trout, Wonderboom and Wyclef Jean can definitely be heard. The band was orginally comprised of Daniel and Gavin who were primary school friends. In std6 they met up with Ricky who had only just started playing drums. From playing afew house parties in STD 7 and 8 Tripping Billy were given their first so called break when they met up with Dan Joffe who was looking for amateur bands to play in a concert organised by him to play with well known South African bands. Due to certain curcumstances the concert never took place but Dan Joffe was starting up a company that managed bands and Tripping Billy were the first band to be signed to ‘Tea Time Music’. Thanks to Dan Joffe Tripping Billy were able to make the transition from playing house parties to the live gig circuit. At this stage T.B didn’t have a permanent bass player, they occasioanlly played with Ryan Pakter (who happens to be the junior mayor) but due to his other commitments he was unable to be fully commited . This was when T.B decided to ask Mathew Nagel to play for them which he did and Tripping Billy was formed.(Tada)The four piece band has just recently been extended by the addition of our violinist, Timmon, whohas transformed their sound, and given them a whole new direction. Tripping Billy have played all over Johannesburg and with many great South African bands such as Squeal, Wonderboom, Wendy Oldfield, Boo, Sugardrive, Fuzi Gish, Ethel my love and Sublemon and are also featured on the ‘Tea n Tequila’ compilation Cd featuring some of these bands. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF TRIPPING BILLYTripping Billy are hoping to finish matric first and formost this year. In the meanwhile between work T.B will try to play as many gigs as possible but mainly concentrate on recording this year. Tripping Billy hope to have a demo album out by the end of this year or beginning of next year. |

Press Reviews
Up step Tripping Billy with their four contributions, slightly less berserk with a powerful yet understated guitar backing to Dan Berkowitz's intense lyrics and vocals. 'For Frank' and 'Second Best' are well-worked and arranged. Guitarist Gavin Steingo wrings all manner of screeching emotions out of his instrument with a patience and looming presence not heard since the days of Free. 'Tastes Like Sugar' and 'Tumble In The Hay' are slower numbers with Berkowitz crooning his "backstreet loving and a little bit of f-cking"-type of emotionally expressive words with his band working hard to support him. Tripping Billy’s first song ‘For Frank’, put me off, with its high pitched, irreverent introduction, "I Tawt I Saw a Puddy Tat" which doesn’t fit in with the band’s brilliant grunge guitar and Dan Berkowitz’s smooth, powerful vocals. ‘Second Best’ has the haunting undertones of a Bush ballad with a great guitar solo. Tripping Billy may not be out on the cutting edge of rock, but if this is anything to go by, the band is going to be very successful. |
