Artist History
The Rileys were formed in 1996 when Scott Riley approached Mike Nash for some studio work. Scott had numerous original songs that he wanted to put to tape so they began with a drum machine and a 4 track recorder. They got a few songs done and realized that they needed live drums to bring the human touch to the rhythm section. Scott asked John Urban, a friend of Mikes, if he would be interested in assisting on the project, and John agreed. After a few recording sessions the guys realized that they were onto something, as the songs were starting to take on a really nice sound, groovy, happy, melodic music that was pleasing even to the most discerning ear. They submitted a tape to local radio station "SURF 107" for their Sunday night local band show and were getting good response. Mike and John were in the band "El Combo Grande" and were playing at a few places when they brought up "The Rileys" for their debut public appearance at "Jacob's Ladder" in Carolina Beach NC. They kept at it for a while playing wherever they could, when Mike had to bow out. Shawn O'Daniels picked up where Mike had left, bringing his own style to the band. When the guys decided to add some more depth to the band, they recruited the help of guitarists Matt McDonald and Shane Mahler to fill up the sound. Now with thier new linup, the band played many of gigs opening up for "The Outhouse Poets", "Mr Hyde" and "El Combo Grande". In 1998, Matt and Shane left to pursue other musical intrests and this left the band looking for a lead guitarist. After a long search for the right guy, they got Terry Janzen from Florence SC, a monster guitarist to say the least, to bring his own influence to the band. 1999 saw the guys back at Houndsounds to record their first EP "The Rileys" a 4 song disc showcasing thier softer, radio friendly songs. The first release, "Better Days" saw much radio airplay in Wilmington on SURF 107's final hour. Later that year the guys added 3 more of their harder, more rockin' songs to the EP and released it as "What's on your mind?" and have been gigging in support of it ever since. |
