Press Reviews Press reviews: Musical Bridge to the New Millennium Jerry Danziger's music is a mosaic of the life he has woven and wandered. It reflects his joy, passion, and pain. The simplistic style frames a deep philosophical undertone. During the last twenty-two years, he has given life to nearly one hundred and fifty songs. Each song is unique and has its own personality. Jerry's guitar has been his constant companion since Kibbutz Barquai, Israel in 1972 and around the globe to Madison,Wisconsin 1999. The stories it could tell... His audiences are transported to a different plane of intensity by his warm and intimate songs. He continues to craft his music and would like to open himself to millions of music lovers around the world. He has lived in many places, but the closest thing to home has been Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. THE OCTOPUS * FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1996 .Elevating Our Humanity With MusicA Local Gypsy ReturnsBy Jenny SoutblynnJerry Danziger has been writing songs that reflect his life since he arrived in the United States in 1977. Danziger grew up in Israel where his parents, European Jews, moved after the war. His mother and father, each the only surviving member of their respective families, began their new lives as members of an Israeli kibbutz. Danziger, his brother and sister were born and raised in the commune.As a boy Danziger painted until his passion died as a result of les-than-inspiring teachers. His creative impulses finally turned to music. "It was a natural transition," says Danziger. "My mother was an incredible musician. She could hear a piece once and pick it up instantly. I was exposed to music when I was young so it came as second nature."In 1977, after serving in the Israeli army, Jerry decided he would travel for a year. It was his first visit to the US. In 1979 he returned traveling in the US and Canada. During a 16-month residence in Canada, Danziger ran out of money and was forced to live on the streets."This marked my official arrival as a musician," - he recalls. "Scrapping it, I wrote songs and played on the street. I made lots of money."For more than three years he lived in CU, where he played with local musicians Mark Deffenbaugh and George Boil in a group aptly called Desperate Man. After this period of relative stability Danziger literally began leading the life of a Gypsy. He lived precariously. In Portland, ME he met Bill Lestock and made his home in the back of Lestock's van. The two formed a duo and played the Portland club scene.Later, in Chicago, he lived in a friend's pantry, playing the streets and small clubs until he met a young woman and married. From this marriage, his only son Asher, was born. Danziger, his wife and son returned and settled again in CU. He worked part time until he discovered carpentry, making it his first steady job. He remains a carpenter to this day.Danziger made his first recording in Maine. The project was financially sponsored by his brother and produced with Lestock. Many of the songs on this first recording were published as poetry by Yaron Golan Publishing House in a book titled "Endless Highway".Danziger's father, a writer, translated the songs into Hebrew. One half of the book is in English, the other in Hebrew. The book and cassette can be found in a few local book and record stores."Gypsy", Danziger's latest work, was recorded by Mike Cerri, a longtime friend from his days on the road. Cerri, a trumpet player, built a recording studio in Baltimore. He left an open invitation for Danziger to record there.The studio, known as Studio 508 Productions, is a not-for-profit venture, recording the works of artists like Stuart Saunders Smith and Shock Therapy (with, New Volcanoes). The studio's intention is to bypass the recording industry to produce works with as little technological interference as possible. The studio prides itself on the nature of live recording, using minimal overdubs, if any. The result is non-commercial music in its undistilled form. It is the very raw nature of the simple, direct sounds of Danziger's voice and his guitar that make "Gypsy" so poignant. With poetry for lyrics and a voice as unaffected as Bob Dylan with a slight Israeli accent, Danziger sings his heart out. Each song is a mirror of a soul, wise and alive with passion. The emotive qualities range from deep introspection, joy, tenderness. lust, longing and humor."This is my favorite recording," he states. "It is alive and immediate. If I make a mistake I just have to live with it. The songs are a part of my life and the things I experience. The songs are my monuments of progress as a human being. They are about my work, love, feeling sad, feeling happy. Most of the songs have stories behind them. They represent something that happened."In an age where technology creates its own reality, and truth has become difficult to discern, it is refreshing to hear a voice so intimate. It is so unfamiliar it is almost uncomfortable. The art of "Gypsy" is an intimacy rarely experienced, remindful of and elevating our humanity.
