Press Reviews
Review of "The Prophecy of Fossos" by David Messer Published in Rolling Stone, November 1986 What the world needs now is a great concept album and that is exactly what Foot and Mouth have provided with The Prophecy of Fossos. It's a passionate, cohesive album that shows this slightly enigmatic four-piece, a group of enthusiastic fourteen-year-olds from Richmond, Victoria, to be one of the most promising bands of the mid-eighties. The album comes with photos and an eight-page magazine/manifesto delineating the odyssey of the band's members from submissive schoolboys to "Ogres of Richmond". Their vision is intensely personal yet seeringly objective. With the casual eyes of innocence they reproduce a world of mums and dads, slugs and burps, untidy rooms and sausage-flavoured doughnuts, presidents and frying pans. All this parades by under the ubiquitous banner of the Fossos and its obscure prophecy. The exact meaning of the Fossos remains unclear but it has something to do with a metal pole from the promised land which has evolved into a sign in Richmond which reads "No Standing Any Time". If older fans are inclined to dismiss the Fossos as pre-pubescent whimsy, perhaps they should look through their record collections at the early work of the Moody Blues, David Bowie, Pete Townshend, the Jefferson Starship and Pink Floyd. Foot and Mouth holds up pretty well. Who can ignore lines such as "I can't see across the room/Satan will be coming soon/Piles of books about Daniel Boone" from Seymour (the Room's a Mess). Even more insistent is the plaintive cry for domesticharmony in I Want My Mummy: "They're fighting over me/Even I can see/There's more to life than just pocketmoney/Mummy poured boiling oil on Daddy's head/They've got to stop or they'll both be dead". Foot and Mouth has mastered numerous genres ranging from the psychedelia of The Prophecy to the wild punk of Fossos and the electro-jazz-country-and-western of I'm Pr'dy Cool. Anchored by a rhythm section as firm as it is elastic, Sean's central guitar strain colours the sound with economy and clarity while keyboard player Steven's barrelhouse pumping forms the backbone of most of the tracks. Ultimately, Foot and Mouth doesn't sound much like any band I've ever heard. Although I suspect that the secret of The Prophecy of Fossos will never be revealed, what does remain is this impressively tight, listenable album. |
