Artist description
The first ever Generative Music compilation, 'Convergence I' is a landmark recording, created by an international group of musicians, working exclusively via the internet. The term 'Generative Music', inspired by Sseyo's 'Koan Pro' computer software, was coined by Brian Eno in 1996, to describe a method of music making where the composer acts as an 'instigator of a process', rather than 'the full specifier of a work'. Making Generative Music involves some unconventional composition methods; it is not a linear process and it invariably involves elements of chance and uncertainty. The composer creates a set of rules that govern the range and focus of permutations for the piece. The software then 'calculates' the implications of these rules in real time and plays them as a midi stream to sound generating devices which then 'perform' this output; a musical process commonly known as algorithmic. The recordings on 'Convergence I' are therefore a snapshot, frozen in time, of one unique event. The next "performance" of the same set of rules will not have the same outcome. While these ideas might seem dry or academic when written down, the sounds of 'Convergence I' tell you the opposite. This is real music with an impact and diversity that reflects the various personalities behind it. 'Convergence I' proves beyond doubt that mathematics really does like to dance. The content of 'Convergence I' cannot be separated from the method of its making. It has evolved as a world-wide project in much the same way as the musical content evolves. In this way, 'Convergence I' is a literal representation of a growing generative movement on the internet, where minds, machines and music converge to create an uncertain whole. Enjoy! |
