Artist History
Checkmate was formed in 1996 in Paris, France. After returning to the states, an EP was recorded in early 1997 titled, "Discriminationwide." It was shopped aroundto several record companies and the general consensuswas to continue writing in the style of the EP's hit,"Mista Flip Top." By 1998 a full-length LP was completedtitled "A Break in the Clouds." This album continued the writing style of MFT and spawned other singles "Sleepless in Flatbush," "Dilate," and "Pot to Piss In." Checkmate relocated to Orlando, Florida in the fall of 1998.The project took a rather lengthy hiatus until Summer 1999to pursue other creative ventures. By August 1999 new songswere recorded and the ABITC LP was scrapped and changed to"Checkmate - Alpha." The three singles were included on ALPHAalong with the newer recordings that complimented those songsand added to the continuity and experiment of the styles.Checkmate is currently recording their follow-up titled,"Y who Kares?" that will be due out sometime in January 2000.We'll keep you posted. |
