Artist description
Lee Hester
If the past year of Lee Hester’s life is any indication of what lies ahead, he is destined for great things. Less than a year ago Lee released his debut rock album titled I’m Ready. Within the first few months of the album’s release, I’m Ready was featured in CMJ Magazine and on the CMJ Certain Damage compilation, making Lee the only independent artist represented on the disc. Following his coverage by CMJ, Sony Pictures phoned Lee in pursuit of two cuts, “Above All This” and “Hold It Down”. The selections were featured in the fall of 2002 during an episode of the popular WB television series, Dawson’s Creek. SESAC then chose Lee to be one of four writers highlighted on the organizations home web page for two consecutive quarters. In the fall Lee hit live radio airwaves during a broadcast on Nashville’s AAA station WRLT, Lightning 100 as the opening act for Grammy Award Winner Ashley Cleveland on the stations famous Nashville Sunday Night Live concert series. And in the midst of all the happenings, Lee stayed busy playing to the favor of local fans at various venues across Nashville.
Much of Lee’s success with his debut album has been because of Lee’s ability to express life, love and emotion. Things that strike a personal cord giving his record more than just a grouping of songs. I’m Ready is an album that has lived in the heart of Lee Hester for many years. While the songs are all brand new, the passion to express through the art of music has burned inside of him since childhood. He has long felt the world through music, and it is through music that creativity and life situations are brought head to head to weave a debut album reaching deep to all who hear it. It is an introspective journey through daily life struggles with songs like “Come Around” and “Hold It Down,” balanced along side songs of break through as represented by the ballad “I’m Ready”. For Lee the most personal song on the album is “Above All This.” “My whole life I have either fought to rise above circumstances, or have known someone who was fighting to rise above circumstance. It’s a universal feeling.” Writing about such universal feelings is what gives the album the ability to relate.
While a great deal of attention is paid to the strong lyrical content, it is the emotion and passion of the melodies that give the album its sense of completeness. “On this record, I focused more on what the melody and the mood of the song was speaking to me. It was almost as if the chords and the progressions would guide me into the lyrics. The music penetrated my heart and inspired me to write what I felt.” The guitar work is risky for a pop album, but the end result is a song with hooks that stay with you. Much of the recording for I’m Ready can be described as impulsive. Some of Nashville’s finest musicians have lent a hand in these tunes.
I’m Ready is a breakthrough independent rock album. It has the sound of seasoned musicianship, with the freshness of raw talent at work. Lee knows how to tell the story of life through music and from the first spin it is a captivating tale!
