Artist History
This particular instrument was forged in S.F., California on August 30, 1970, and
spent its next few years in Seattle, WA and Erie, PA. Then, in the woods of New Jersey,
MACHET-T was tested by the cold weather, dense woods and hard water. These and
other strenuous conditions may have caused some nicks and scratches, but no rust
whatsoever. This northern tenure lasted 8 years until the migration south in '84.
MACHET-T has been in Atlanta (S.E. plus S.W.AT shawhty!!) and Decatur, GA chopping out trails of omniversal
consciousness for a decade and a half. Marked by hard-core sounds of all types, mostly
Roots Rockers Rasta Reggae vibrations/dub poets such as Linton Kwesi Johnson and
Mutabaruka, conscious Roughneck Hip Hop artists/groups like KRS-ONE, Public Enemy,
Poor Righteous Teachers, Shinehead, Asher D and Daddy Freddy, Mad Lion, Eric B and
Rahkim, and Ice T as major influences have made MACHET-T sharp and ready for action. MACHET-T was branded with and aimed towards progress as a featured artist with the group HIT EM QUICK AND HARD POSSE from '93-'95, and appears on the EP's RUFFNECK COME and PASS THE BLUNTS, in
addition to the compilation album, HISTORY OF ATLANTA REGGAE VOLUME I
on TechSound Records. MACHET-T signed an exclusive artist agreement for a ten song album and a four song EP with the
Mindstate Entertainment record label, owned by Joseph "JSIII" Smith, in July of 1997 that lasted until the advent of the year 2000. This artist and BMI affiliated writer's Mindstate 12" single entitled OUT THE SHEATH featuring the songs HIP HOP SOUL with
singer GINGER and lyricist JSIII, and QUEEN with singer/producer ROC and JSIII, introduced MACHET-T as a solo artist.
This single was in regular rotation on WRFG 89.3 FM in Atlanta and was just the first cut
off the 15 track album/compact disc DUAL EDGE BLADE offically released February
29, 2000. Hacking away at downpressors for many years now, the dual edge sounds of
MACHET-T have been deeply penetrating straight to the heart of matters with roughly
smooth vocals. MACHET-T has been tempered to keep us focused on the point! Be prepared to feel the cut of the MACHET-T!

Atlanta-area recording artist Machet-T opens up his album Dual Edge Blade with a
brief but unsettling cyberpunk soundbite entitled "Definition," but what actually defines this rapper's
sound is the second track, "Feel the Vibe." The grooves kick in hard on this nearly perfect blend of hip-
hop and reggae, which places convincingly Jamaican-inflected raps atop a rocksteady salvo of scratchy
urban turntable effects. Mr. T's "Hip Hop Soul," which features additional vocals by JSIII and Ginger,
swipes its hook from Dobie Gray's "Slip Away" to great effect, and he serves up some especially intense
political raps on "Theme," backed up by the clank of steel hammers, as the studio were haunted by a
distant, ghostly chain gang. "Bubblin," which includes vocals by Mother Superia, is less successful - the
persona of its song becomes lost in a plethora of assorted voices and overstrained rhymes ("It's like Clash
of the Titans/I pick up the mic and start recycling!") *{Superia actually says reciting} But saving the best for last, Machet-T wraps up
this solid 15-song salvo with "If the Walls Could Talk," an eerie number punctuated by unsettling
electronic sounds that simulate dripping water.
Pulling together all these diverse tracks - which were recorded at a wide assortment of
locations by an equally wide range of producers - could not have been easy, but mastering maestro J.
Springfield has done an exceptional job of a getting (sic) handle on this Dual Edge Blade, and making it
all sound of a piece. Contact: (404) 412-4657, or j_smith_III_@hotmail.com

"Machet-T Dual-Edge Blade Mindstate Entertainment
Wow! I repeat, wow! I definitely got more than I was expecting on Machet-T's, Dual-
Edge Blade. The album is a very compete (sic) combination of lyrics and production. It reminded me of
some Mad Lion Shit the way Machet-T chats over hip-hop beats, but if they were ever to battle, the Lion
might get taken down.
Now, I don't know the album's producer, JSIII, but yo', he's my man!** {J Phunk, J. Springfield produced Spark It, No Play, and Hardcore} The beats he
drops on this joint are phatter than Kenya Moore and Pam Grier put together. For instance, "Spark It"
with its neck-breakin' beat will work kids into a cypher frenzy. Much more of the same is witnessed on
"We No Play" and "Hardcore", with production that would make Dr. Dre proud. Then, using one of very
few samples, JSIII gets creative as he reworks Taste O' Honey's "Sukiyaki" to enhance "No Enz-No
Benz".
The Standouts of the disk are quite possibly "Queen" and "Hip Hop Soul". The former
celebrates the real, true, strong, Black women with mad lyrics and a growling lyrical complement that is
reminiscent of the rapper Nine (Double M). While the latter flashes back to when hip-hop was in the
infant stage and was solely for the dedicated. Also, check Mother Superia's appearance on "Bubblin'" as
she gets her flip on.
On the real, you can drop this joint in the changer and just ride out and won't have to
fast-forward. But, be sure that your seat belt is secure or else you might bust ya head on the windshield
from all the wicked head bobs. - RANDOM"

"Machet-T's sharp words
The story of Atlanta underground rapper Machet-T is all about duality. On
record, he switches up between straight hip-hop and dancehall reggae toasting, always
flowing smooth -- in double-time, triple-time and back without breaking a sweat. He
often plays point-counterpoint with himself, dropping down from his already deep
cigarette-stained bass tone to a craggy rumble, something like an incredibly world weary
Shabba Ranks.
On his just-released debut solo CD, Dual-Edge Blade (on the Marietta-
based Mindstate Entertainment), Trevor Lawson -- aka Machet-T -- finds himself caught
in the middle of his own battle to stay positive while addressing the social injustice he
sees all around him. "I don't want to be a negative force, at least not completely
negative," he says echoing heroes like Public Enemy, KRS-One and Bob Marley. "I'm
not trying to cause a lot of bloodshed, but I'm not going to shy away from talking about a
system that has profited from inequity. I'm talking about institutionalized inequity."
Although he talks about his frustrations bubbling up in violence, Machet-T
is more activist than gangsta, more philosopher than street fighter. The son of a
psychologist mother and a father who was an IBM executive, Lawson says he grew up
"straight upper-middle class" and gravitated in college toward the writings of African
social theorist Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart.
Whether he's railing against the Jacuzzi-and-Cristal mentality of mainstream
hip-hop, shouting out encouragement to those working hard to make ends meet or
offering much respect to the ladies, Machet-T is determined to raise consciousness and
provoke thought. "There's always another half of the story, like Bob Marley said, the half
that hasn't been told."
--Randy Trammell
Machet-T hosts a CD release party at Dottie's on Tues. Feb. 29 during Beat Research.
He also performs at Somber Reptile on Fri. Feb. 25"
