Artist History
Take a walk in New York City on a cool day, past the Village jazz clubs.
Now, imagine a Jamaican parade threading past you, the reggae rhythms blending with the be-bop in a complex gust of wind.
But then the sun comes out from behind a cloud and suddenly you feel warm. That is what Mitch Weiss's music is all about.
Mitch is a multi-instrumentalist, but his harp packs an arsenal of different sounds that make him unique.
His tone moves easily from WARM to SASSY and BRIGHT -- from MELLOW to SNARLY.
His lows fall into the gut-bucket, while his clarinet-like highs are pure jazz.
Emotionally we can easily follow, but physically, how can he do that?
A self-taught musician, born and raised in New York City, Mitch began performing professionally in 1971 in
Ithaca, N.Y., but soon moved on to Chicago where his original jazz and blues compositions blended with
the Latin rhythm section of the "New Earth Rhythm Band". They were regulars on the home-grown music
scene at the Quiet Knight and Wise Fools Pub, playing clubs and colleges throughout the Midwest, later
recording on the first Best of Chicago Hometown Album. In 1978 he moved backed to Long Island where he
joined forces with "Little Buster And The Soul Brothers," a top R&B band in the region. Mitch's harp playing
and vocals electrified audiences from NYC to the Hamptons. In addition to his session work with Ritchie Blackmore, he
has opened for and jammed with the likes of B.B. King, Rick Danko & Paul Butterfield, Johnny Winter, Albert King,
Muddy Waters and many others. Mitch is currently concentrating on his recording career and has produced two CDs
of his own compositions. Mitch's music, like that intricate New York breeze, is a captivating blend of styles.
His years of professional performing and jamming with the greats give him a relaxed ease that you can also hear
in his guitar playing. His songs evoke a wide range of emotions. "Street Music" conjures up images of sharing a
gallon jug of wine with friends, while you get a hard-driving caffeinated jump from "Feel Like Boogien' Tonight."
His voice is like that of an older brother who loves you, but who somehow always gets you into trouble.
Now, let's take another walk, but this time down the main street of a smallish Midwest town. We come upon an
old dance hall that's seen better days. 'Round back there is a loose brick in the wall concealing a bottle of
whiskey that Bix Beiderbecke stashed there many years ago. Imagine that Sonny Boy Williamson once found and took
a swig from that very same bottle in the wall -- then he played like he never played before. He replaced the bottle,
planning on returning -- but he never did. Now, Mitch Weiss finds the bottle and takes a pull. Then he reaches for
his custom chromatic harmonica (chopped and tuned into a blues harp by the Celtic wizard Brendan Power).
This harp is Mitch's Philosopher's Stone -- like the strange bottle behind the brick it has magical properties -- but only
in the hands of the right player.
Mitch Weiss IS that player!

Press Reviews
Listeners comments: Yes! The new Blow Your Little House Down is great! Right on my friend! Awsome stuff. Giving "Cruisin'" another listen as I type...Mmmmmmmm... You ARE the man! The only one I've ever heard who uses this harp(Richter tuned chromatics)professionally is Mitch Weiss, a fabulous jazz player who also loves to wail the blues. - Mojo Red,Harp-l; Street Music sounds great, a real funky track. Stompin By Myself sounds great - a perfect blend of the bluesy and jazzy qualities of the instrument. It sounds so good that, with your permission, I'll add a link to the tune on the CX10 on my website. - Brendan Power; Sittin' here lisitening to your tunes...I listen to a ton of HARP music...and i can honestly say that your sound is right up there w/the best...your TONE is HUGE/WARM/SASSY/BRIGHT/BRASSY/SNARLY, amongst other adjectives. You have an arsenal of different sounds - dan skorich,Harp-l; Bitchinnharp mitch, i ordered the cd - brian bertha,Harp-l; I checked out your music. It's really great! I especially like 'Stompin by Myself" and "Street Music". The harp tone is awesome. Soundslike a sweet clarinet in the higher notes. - Rick Beall, Bluesharp.org; I like both ("Little Walter Meets A.C. Jobim" and "Stompin' By Myself"), great playing on both of them, but I do like "Stompin'By Myself " better. I think its use of a special harmonica is very interesting. -Tinus,Harp-l; The first time Mitch and I came into contact was because he had done something that could be considered virtually impossible. I had just published a review on a certain type of harmonica that had such nasty shortcomings I considered it unfit for any serious musician since it would take more efforts than would be worthwhile. The musician would simply hinder himself and limit his possibilities without reason. Then Mitch contacted me and directed me to seeveral of his recordings, proving that by sheer talent and willpower the instrument could indeed be made to sound good. Very good, I mustsay. I was impressed that first time and I am impressed again with the new recordings Mitch recently added. This time he did use a better harmonica, especially built for him by the New Zealand harmonica wiz Brendan Power. Way to go Mitch! For all you out there: this music is a "must-listen". -Paul van der Sijde,(Doc Harmonica); Hey hey..I like that.....(Street Music) i hate to compare artists...but that's like a van morrison - cleanin windows, with some beach styles in it. Nice. Hey You guys have a great ThanksGiving, be safe, and I will get this into Dec's line up. -DJ Dawg,DHNet radio; Great sound, nice approach to playing--very horn-like.-Bill Price,Harp-l; I'm actually listening to "cruisin'" as I type this...Anyway, I like it a bunch. ( sounds like you're using a diatonic sometimes and a chrom sometimes?). - Ruper Oysler,Harp-l; I've only slow Internet access so I only downloaded one of your songs: "I'm Gonna Blow Your Little House Down". Very impressive! Your harp really smokes, and your singing and accompaniment is very good too. -Orjan Hansson,Harp-l; Your now included in the Bluesmans Radio station. Nice stuff. You are also on the top of the station.-Jalk Falk,MP3.com; Hi Mitch I loved your stuff I will be adding some of your tracks to Mojo's Bag Radio Station a little bit later on. -Carlos Diaz, MP3.com; Listening to your material as I write and love your harmonica-Kathy Wade,MP3.com; Mitch Weiss(his"Only Fools Know" is just about my favorite song right now) -Erik Jay,MP3.com |
