Artist History
"ARTIST BIO"Some songs are man made and some seem to come from nature fully formed. The songs of Ben Rait fall into the second category. Totally unique yet familiar, you'll swear you've heard these songs before. After one listen you find yourself humming the melodies of songs it seems like you've known your whole life. There are ballads, rockers and bona fide anthems, and every one of the songs on "BORN A REBEL" seems as natural as breath. There is none of the awkward feeling of a songwriter trying to force his square sentiments through the round hole of a pop song. Each song seems the quintessence of the genre it represents rather than just another replica stamped from the mold. Gunshots, car wrecks, county jails; heartache and pain with a dash of redemption-all are subject matter on "BORN A REBEL". It could have been the melodrama of bad country music except for the fact that the source material is personal history, not sentimental imagination. 'The years weren't always kind to me but I weathered every storm' Rait sings in the title song. As a very young man, Ben Rait's dreams were almost prematurely ended when a gunshot passed through his left wrist. There was some doubt as to whether he would regain functioning in the hand, which makes it all the more astounding that Rait succeeded in becoming a lead guitarist of prodigious talent, a stylist whose direct phrasing looks you straight in the eye and tells you the real story, leaving the histrionics to the show boys. With influences like Dylan and the Stones and assistance from two-time gold record producer Gary Spaniola, Rait gives a synthesis of expression on "BORN A REBEL" that might seem incongruous: love that must be spoken gently and the kind of pain that can only be purged by screaming. |
