    Press Reviews
"OSS consists of 3 former members of the "discontinued" 5-4-1 band that heavily toured churches and events in the late 80's in early 90's. Upon hearing the first 5 seconds of OSS's opening song I knew immediately that the similarities stopped there. 5-4-1 was essentially a Southern Gospel/Cathedral type of group whereas OSS is far from that. At the beginning of the first song when Tim Brooks and Clint Bicknell started strumming away on their guitars, I was VERY impressed at the unique sound OSS had to offer the usually watered-down Contemporary Christian music arena. Next Paul Cardulla (drums), Jared Messer (keyboard), and Duane Patrick (bass), all added much flavor to the song and I was almost hoping not to hear the first word sung. I feared that the vocalist (Tim Brooks) may ruin a great musical combination, but my "fears" quickly proved to be hollow as Tim belted out the first verse and went on into the chorus. Tim Brooks has an amazing voice that flows perfectly with OSS's catchy music. Not only can the guy sing, but he's a great guitar player as well and really brings a rock influence to the forefront of many songs! Another pleasant surprise was hearing the harmonies that OSS has arranged in many of their songs. These harmonies easily compare with those of: 4-Him and Whiteheart among others. Okay, so these guys' play great music and sound great...how about their "entertainment value?" Again they come through as all members seem to be having a blast doing something they really love to do (that is apparent through their music). Something that reflects this is the way the group interacts with one another during the show. All the while they even poke fun at themselves, referring to themselves at one point in the show as, "5 big dorks!" If OSS knows how good they really are, then they aren't letting us know and that is really refreshing! One of the many highlights of the evening's setlist came with the rendition of "Nothing but the Blood." EVERY single member shines on this song at one point or another in an extended jam session filled with 5+ solos! Not long after this "gem" there was an intermission. Following the break the members came back with a "Stump the Band" segment. The challenge: "We can play {this much} of any song!" Sounded improbable, but they came through in a big way and the crowd LOVED IT! Everything from "Staying Alive," to "Elvira," to "Sweet Home Alabama," to "YMCA," to "Lullaby," to a personal favorite of mine, "Crash Into Me" was shouted out and they backed up their words by playing all of them to near perfection. To go without mentioning some of the well-crafted ballads would be a crime. Jared Messer, who picks up the guitar on this song as well as a few others, does a wonderful job on "A Miracle Ain't A Miracle," and "Wasting the Fire" is also another all-around great song. OSS has all of the elements of a successful band: Songwriting, great lyrics by Clint and Jared that are definitely Christian, but on a deeper level and definitely not "in-your-face", musical performance, vocals, and an entertaining show to offer it's fans. If and when OSS makes it big I can't wait to see what they will do in their live shows. I'm guessing there will be more extended jam sessions incorporated into their songs. For some reason I just got the impression on a few songs tonight that they were holding back some, but even still they went much further than most bands do today. Too often bands just play and sing the song and go onto to the next one. OSS actually PLAYS the song and makes you FEEL it and makes the song come alive by a mixture of guitars, drums, and keyboards. So if they are so good what's keeping these guy's from moving on to the next level? My guess is they just haven't had time to commit to making it yet, or maybe they don't actually realize how good they are! As a former music director at a Contemporary Christian station I was forced to listen to hours of music every night from record labels such as: Myrrh, Sparrow, Reunion, Word, and others. A LOT of it was horrible and had no business being printed on a CD...most of what I heard tonight EASILY would've made my cut for airplay and some of the songs are in my HONEST and UN-BIASED opinion Top Ten caliber! OSS WILL get a record label to sign them-I'm VERY confident of that...it's just a matter of when and how long it will take for someone to discover this great talent that lies here in SouthWest Ohio."Scott Sanders
