Artist History
Make Mine Music is a collective of musicians formed in 2002 by members of the bands Portal, yellow6, Schengen, Innerise, July Skies, Epic 45, Weyland, Northern Lakes and Avrocar. A label of the same name was established on which to release the recordings, by the artists singularly and jointly. Many of the artists collaborate on their music, with the label run as a co-operative venture in which decision-making is shared and autonomy and independence is retained. Make Mine Music will be releasing a 16 track CD compilation "Flow" in early 2004. The CD will be available in a limited run of 500 copies with stamped sleeves and artwork postcard. Press Reviews
"The structure of 'Split' reflects the impartiality and camaraderie involved with operating Make Mine Music. Each band is represented in equal parts; the first two tracks are from Portal, followed by two yellow6 tracks and then rounding out with four collaborative pieces by Sinfield and Attwood. But politics aside, what does the music sound like? Both Portal and yellow6 share a similar voice and vision, primarily fuelled by the humid, meditative atmospherics of processed guitar. What they compose is movement music - deep-toned, reverberating twangs that fit best against a shifting landscape, against the feeling of being far from home. Listening to tracks like Portal's 'Hold', yellow6's 'The Sinking Sun', and Sinfield/Attwood's '#4' conjures up images of unbroken horizons, abandoned stacks of rusting railway ties, and fields of wild prairie grass." (Fake Jazz, December 2002) *** "The second release from the new electronic label Make Mine Music is another collaborative effort. However, this time it's Bristol collective Schengen who dominate 'EP' having written or co-written all the music on offer. The tracks, recorded live, by Schengen and Portal are a delight. The first, 'Capitol' evokes comparisons with the alien worlds of Boards Of Canada whilst 'B'Leaf' is steeped in Scott Sinfield's 4AD-style guitar playing and Schengen's Harold Budd-mimicing piano minimalism. Though these efforts are unquestionably the main attraction of the CD, two remixes are offered for a Schengen original named 'Seti'; Weyland's 'On Safari' mix borrows disturbing effects from This Mortal Coil and Innerise opt for the understated, downbeat side. Finally, Schengen go solo with the oceanic, well-titled 'Grace'. Long may Make Mine Music continue producing music of this calibre." (Leonard's Lair, February 2003)
