    Press Reviews
exclaim magazine "after years of bad luck, toronto's maybrick finally has something to cheer about. their second record, the follow-up to 1998's white noise, is an album that should never have happened, hence it's title. breakuptheband is the sound of a band on the brink of imploding, but instead used that added energy and emotion to write bigger and better songs. the title track kicks off the album in explosive, guitar-crunching form; however it's the following song that sets the album's pace. 'falling for the oldest trick in the book' is a moody yet beautiful song that, with the slightest touch of distortion and josh norton's soft-hearted voice, becomes a devastating tearjerker. from there, the album's range stretches, moving from road trip worthy am rock ('lazy') and electro-fuzz pop ('lizzy stride') to the wonderfully romantic 'abductee', featuring guitarist brian scott's finest work on the record. breakuptheband may be one of the last titles most acts would name a record, but maybrick has taken this taboo and turned it into a brilliantly constructive idea." cam lindsay canadian music network indie album of the month "this is the second album from this toronto quintet, following 1999's white noise. maybrick specializes in guitar-drenched power pop -- kind of like weezer or jimmy eat world, but with more feedback and less emphasis on disposable two-and-a-half-minute sonic nuggets. breakuptheband shows the group's dynamic melodic sensibilities, and frontman joshua norton's vocals evoke comparisons to david usher, and the longer, looser tracks sound a bit like early moist. the title track features swirling guitars reminiscent of the smashing pumpkins, while lead single 'lazy' is a wonderfully catchy bit of power pop. 'lizzy stride' makes interesting use of synths buried beneath the dense guitar buzz, giving the track a cool '80s vibe. 'i follow, you lead', which originally appeared on white noise but was re-recorded for the new album, has a similarly layered feel. maybrick also has a knack for bittersweet ballads like 'falling for the oldest trick in the book' and the beautiful 'abductee'. breakuptheband is a triumph of sonically intense power pop from an impressive up-and-coming canadian indie band." bloodline music "in a world now bombarded by cookie-cutter rock music, it's nice to hear a unique band such as maybrick. this 5-piece powerhouse from toronto is breaking down barriers with their brand new cd. breakuptheband, maybrick's second cd to date, is a tight rendition of 9 uniquely intense songs. their live shows are equally as intense, gathering large crowds and mezmerizing them with their shoe-gazing melodies and dynamic energy. good enough to inspire anyone with a sense of intelligent songwriting, breakuptheband is a sure fire way to re-introduce old fans to new melodies and gain new ones along the way. in a nutshell, i dig this cd. one minute obscurely aggressive, the next minute fading free into thought-provoking oblivion, breakuptheband is a speedwagon of emotions, riding high on original songwriting, dedication and intelligent musical arrangements. i encourge everyone to hear maybrick." all music guide amg rating 4 out of 5 "coming off eerily like the smiths or a revitalized suede, this toronto based band mixes glam rock with the slightest trace of more aggressive rock vigor, exemplified by the closing 'crinoline'. the brilliant closing track resembles radiohead at the top of its game. the title track starts off with a credible if imperfect melody, but the pretty and morbid groove in 'falling for the oldest trick in the book' is similar to suede's 'down' in tone and tempo. brian scott's guitar shines through over lead singer joshua norton's emotive, brit delivery. 'lazy' is anything but, with a great and deliberate guitar building one crunchy guitar riff after another. keyboardist dan mathers adds his touches on the song, which only adds to its shine. there are also obvious influences from the cure, especially on 'i follow, you lead', which allows each instrument to enter the song in the introduction, with the vocals beginning after more than a minute. thankfully, only a couple of songs sound a bit forced or tired, perhaps attempting to recreate the early to mid-eighties alternative rock sound perfectly, as 'without' is evident of that. 'lizzy stride' consists of a mid-eighties pop rock slant but with a lovely guitar solo at its core. obviously, the highlight has to be a softer, more melodic guitar-driven 'my last night ends just as it began', with norton hitting all the right notes along the way. but equally brilliant is the anthem-like 'abductee', particularly its long and winding instrumental closing." jason macneil now magazine now rating 3 out of 5 "local power-pop quintet maybrick have finally completed their follow-up to their 1998 debut, white noise. apparently, they experienced a long run of bad luck that almost convinced them to call it quits; hence the title. there's a lot to like here for fans of britpop. they seem to be trying to condense the various aspects of alternative pop into one sound, and actually succeed in piecing together a coherent sound for themselves out of the references. singer joshua norton's smiths fascination is evident in his phrasing and melancholy, but he unfortunately lacks morrissey's sense of irony, which would have kept some of his moping in check." benjamin boles in music we trust "sexy music for fans who love musicians who love their fans. 'break up the band', (the title track) unleashes romantic pop-rock soundscapes and brilliant guitar work in an eloquent culmination and demise of innocence that is maybrick. 'without' issues sickly sweet lines of poetry such as 'i can't survive without your love' beneath the kerrang of guitars and percussion bent on sweeping a crowd off of its feet. delivering 9 tracks with nearly 43 total minutes of running time, winds whirl around the eye of the hurricane on a co-dependent lover's tale of woe riding on a storm of futuristic music that feels like perfection spilled into catchy chorus lines, and lovely ballads that leave you hanging around for the first strains of the very next song." jett black
