Artist History
DEJA VU was formed by Cenk (guitar), Kerem (vocals), Ahmet (drums) and Mansur Asrar (Bass Guitar/back vocals) on October 1999. We initially started covering songs but we were not interested in traditional covers. We wanted to add our own touch on the covers we did. Soon we started to write our own songs. Our first song was “Hope” which we still play. We had to give a break to rehearsels as Mansur had an accident and needed an operation. After the break we continued rehearsing on March 2000. Our priority as a band was to write our own songs rather than only playing covers. So we started concentrating more on our own songs. But Kerem left the band due to some misunderstandings. A search for a new vocalist started. But Kerem returned to the group after some time. We started rehearsing more because of our wish to make a name of ourselves as we have all been involved in musical projects for a long time. We wished to give concerts and wanted people to listen to our sound. We also incorporated the violin into our sound as we were all very fond of its effect on music. Traditional turkish instruments like the Darbuka (Kerem) and Baglama (Kivanc) were added to the roaster. We believed that our untraditional sound would definitely draw the attention of the listeners.
We gave our first club concert on November 2000. Following the concert DEJA VU started to record its first DEMO CD. We recorded two songs (Star and Nothing) but never released the DEMO. After several concerts we had our first important concert. We were the opening act for a famous Turkish band (Kurban) on March 2001. The concert was held at the large Saklikent Concert Hall in Ankara. The concert was successful but the problems between the vocalist and the band members persisted so Kerem had to leave the band.
Following the summer holidays we had to continue the band with some changes in the line up. Guntac replaced Ahmet on the drumset. Erce became the new bassist and Mansur became the new vocalist. The violin player had to leave the band because of her studies. The rest of the band remained.
We gave our first concert with the new line up on January 2002 at Saklikent. We had written some new materials in Turkish to appeal for the Turkish crowd but our main concentration was English. The reaction we recieved from the audience motivated DEJA VU to aim at better things. But just as things were on track Cenk experienced some health problems. This was probably the longest break we had. Some of us concentrated on some side projects to keep in touch with music. But Kivanc, who was playing the baglama went for his military service.
During Summer 2002 Cenk and Mansur got together and reformed the band. But some of the old members could not participate in DEJA VU anymore because of the work and school lives. Cenk searched and found two new people to take the parts for drummer and bass guitarist. Baris started to play the drums and Tolga started playing the bass guitar. By covering 3 songs a week and concentrating on their own songs at the same time, we were able to play 26 cover and 12 songs of our own within a period of 3 months. Mansur proposed the band members to add Gorkem to the line up of the band, thinking that it would be good to once again add a violin player. So, Gorkem became a member of the band.
DEJA VU gave three concerts in the three months that followed. The new members and songs were very much appreciated. As positive results were achieved, we started working on a website, which we were planning to publish but couldnt previously concentrate on. We also started working on a new recording at the same time. DEJA VU recorded three songs (Shaggy’s HEY SEXY LADY, R U READY? and YETER ARTIK). We also decided to add another song (STAR), which we had previously recorded, to the new recordings and release the four tracks as a DEMO CD. We recorded a video clip for our song R U READY? at Zoo Music Productions Studio. We added the video clip on our DEMO CD in MPEG format, believing that putting a video clip is an original idea for the DEMO CD as is it not practiced much.
We finally the DEMO CD titled “R U READY?”, selling 100 copies on the first week. A further 100 followed in the next week and a half. DEJA VU played at the Bilkent Mayfest 2003 on the 8th of May. Then we took part in the ARMADA YOUTH FESTIVAL on the 19th of May. Some more concerts followed, including Saklikent Corefest 6 and others. Futhermore the DEMO CD of DEJA VU was introduced on the YUXEXES program of of Turkish music channel DREAM TV. |
