Artist description The king of Thrace, he chased Dionysus' nurses with an ox goad, frightening even Dionysus himself and causing him to jump into the sea. Thetis rescued Dionysus, who later returned to Thrace, cursed the crops, and drove Lycurgus mad. Lycurgus killed his son, maimed himself, and was then torn apart by his own people (Homer, Iliad 6.130-140; Apollodorus 3.5.1; Hyginus, Fabulae 132).
