Hawks History
Sometime between Beatlemania and Woodstock Nation, Ft. Dodge , Iowa high school classmates Kirk Kaufman and Frank Wiewel started their first serious band, West Minist'r, and eventually became stars of the Midwest ballroom circuit. Hoping for hit records of their own, the band took the road less traveled and built their own 16-Track, Westlake Audio-designed studio in a converted chicken coop on Kirk's father's farm outside the nearby small town of Otho (population , then and now, around 300). The studio was christened West Minist'r Sound, and the plan was to pay the bills by renting out the facility to other area groups. West Minist'r the band didn't last long, but word spread throughout the North Coast about the studio and it became a magnet for the region's players, singers, and songwriters.
Early in 1979 Kirk and Frank spliced together a reel of tape containing songs culled from recordings the two had made throughout the 70s. Cassettes were circulated to major record labels and were met with immediate and overwhelmingly positive response. The labels loved the music and wanted to know more about "the band" which didn't exist yet. Kirk and Frank identified three Midwestern players & songwriters who'd registered especially strong signals on the studio's radar over the years, and Dave Hearn, Dave Steen and Larry Adams were invited to become part of "the project" which became the band HAWKS.
In April of 1981 their first Columbia single, "Right Away" reached #63 on the Billboard's Hot 100 Chart. Soon thereafter "It's All Right, It's OK", reached #32 on Billboard's brand new "Top Tracks" album rock chart. But just as the momentum was building, a clean sweep change of regimes at the label interrupted promotion on HAWKS' self titled first album. Their second album,
30 Seconds Over Otho, was released without fanfare in the summer of 1982, and soon thereafter Columbia notified the band it would not be picking up its option for a third album. After three extraordinary but grueling years, HAWKS finished out some live dates and decided to call it a day- leaving dozens of unissued songs in the studio's vault.
