Artist History
We are ninepoundnote, a five piece ska punk band from the wonderful city known as Bradford! But âhow did it all happen?â I hear you ask! Let me tell you...
The band started way back in early 2001 and was the brain child of James Muff (also known as âThe Smuffâ). He teamed up with percussionist Chris Kitson and soon became a cover band playing gigs around their hometown and in general having fun with music. Came and went various members but Smuff and Chris stayed together as a band and changed their group name every week to spice things up. Some may comment on Smuff and Chrisâ homo-erotic relationship but they themselves will deny it.
In the summer of 2002, after getting bored of doing covers the band got 2 more permanent members in the form of Mike Braybrook and Sam Hill. This band was known as ninepoundnote. In late 2002 the bandâs strangest member, Sam Hill, decided to venture abroad (he went to live in Austria) and left ninepoundnote without a singer. Insteps Jonathan Sidebottom, or Jonny as he likes to be called. This oddly surnamed boy showed dedication to the band and introduced them to the world of gigging and other bands, and most importantly ninepoundnote began to write their own music!
So there they were; Jonny, Smuff, Mike, and Chris. ninepoundnote released their first CD entitled âbig issuesâ (which compared to their current standards is appalling) but hey, itâs where it all began. And ninepoundnote played a successful amount of support and headlining gigs around Bradford. Slowly but surely, the band began to build up a strong fan base which has helped all the way.
Then came âthe changeâ. Because they were so original and full of ideas, ninepoundnote decided to take part in Bradfordâs strong ska scene!? Thatâs right, ninepoundnote went ska (or ska punk if you want to be more accurate). Unfortunately, not everyone loves ska as much as Smuff, Chris, and Jonny and so the bassist, Mike, dropped out. So a replacement was found in the form of Jonathan Sture (also known as Sture). Yup, another Jonathan in the band!!!
The final step for the band was getting a brass section. Though the band tried hard with advertising this, there was no response. However, when Chris went to a week long summer school at The Leeds College Of Music, he met an interesting feller called John Conyers who just so happened to play the trumpet. He was invited to an audition, and 2 practices later, John was playing gigs with the ânote.
And so, here endeth the legend that is ninepoundnote and may they continue to fill the world with their own brand for pure presentable Bradfordian ska punk. |
