Artist description
matador red was formed in the summer of 2002 and the 5 performers featured bring different backgrounds together and try to forge a unique approach to music. Shannon Mims grew up in Florida singing and playing gospel music on Sundays and picking out cool Rock-n-Roll riffs on the piano the rest of the week. He studied classical French horn in college and received his degree in music, but his musical tastes continued to vary from Big Band to Herb Alpert to Skronk Jazz. After a chance encounter with a $2.00 trumpet and an old accordion, he completed the instrumentation he brings to matador red. Leon Daniel began beating on pots, pans and oatmeal boxes at an early age. Piano lessons at 5, church choir and drum lessons followed before he picked up a tuba in the 7th grade. Naturally, he went on to study music education and is rumored to have played drums in a previous life, but bass is his choice of weapon in matador red. Anje Seufert started her musical journey as an infant dancing in her crib and was greatly influenced by her father, who was playing in a band during her adolescence. She played piano and clarinet through school and studied with John Tosco for 5 years. She also performs as a singer/songwriter and brings an appealing and effervescent songcrafting skill to matador red. Greg Pancake started music at a young age beginning with piano lessons and church choir. After a stint during his junior year in college, performing at a coffee house on piano AND gourd shaker at the same time, it was suggested he take up drumming and the rest ,as they say, is history. He is a Vermont native and wonders why we don’t make our own maple syrup down south (no kidding! his name IS Pancake!) matador red will have its own brand of breakfast treats soon at a store near you. Thomas Hendley received his degree in music and did the whole cover band thing before deciding that dentistry was much more to his liking as a profession. He did not forget his love of song and continued to perform as a singer/songwriter and brings a wealth of talent to matador red on guitar and keyboards . Rock, Folk, Jazz and Pop music all fit into the matador red blueprint for sound---original, unique and ever-changing. |
