MAJOR DANGER If you were looking for the source that laid down the blueprint for modern dancehall music, then the name you should know is Major Danger. Before the time of ‘bling-bling’, big record deals, and the internet, Craig Taylor (aka Major Danger) began his career dejaying on the sound systems of New York City. Starting out on little local sounds, news of his skills traveled quickly. It wasn’t long before he was dejaying on the big sounds around town, such as Downbeat, Papa Moke, African Love, Mini Mart, and Third World. When sounds like Stone Love, Gemini, King Jammys and Arrows came to New York you could be sure Major was there rocking the crowd. After tearing up the dancehall and club scenes, Major left Brooklyn and moved to ‘Strong’ Island (Long Island). There he linked up with the element high power sound system and met producer Desmond “Bagga” Brown. Bagga was so impressed with Major’s lyrical content and unique flow he carried him to the studio to record his first single, “Proud to be Black”, a collaboration with veteran reggae superstar Cocoa Tea. This record enjoyed significant success in the United States and Europe. On the heels of this hit, Major released his second single “Know How Fi Move” with veteran producer Philip Smart. This song followed suit, becoming a monster hit in Europe. Major realized living in New York had its advantages. Having firsthand access to hip-hop, he quickly fused the two styles together and became the innovator of a trend that people still love to this day.
