Artist description
“Despite the "funny" sounding name, these guys take no prisoners. Politically motivated lyrics coalesce with serious fury, geniune rage and anger celebrated with heartfelt passion and true power AND violence. CCH use the instrumentation of two basses, these kids from Karlsruhe and the Black Forest take on straight brutal metal, mayhemic mosh galore and ballistic blast beat drumming.” |

Artist History
The name costa’s cake house, originating in a visit to the greek island korfu, stands for more than just nice holiday memories. We have the feeling that in the Hardcore scene nowadays there are so many bands with superficial, evil sounding names around, which only serve the purpose to fit easy in a category. That’s nothing we want. We want to confront people with a name, music and lyrics not so easy to categorize. We want you to scratch the surface and not to lean back. This is what our understanding of hardcore is about, to look closer and not only see the surface.
Costa’s Cake House is in existence since the beginning of 1998. We started as an power violence band with some screamo influences. Since back then we went through two line up changes. Steve, our original guitar player was replaced by Matthias and in the beginnig of 2k we added Arnaud as a second bassplayer to the band, which made our sound more intense and brutal.
During this time our music developped and changed. It became more metal orientated and more technical. In our sound there are now elements of hardcore, death metal, grindcore and emo combined, but we still manage to keep our own sound and identity.
Our lyrics have mostly a personal background, but still deal with socio-political aspects and problems of our lives. It’s all written from a personal point of view. We also deal with personal experiences and situations in our lives, basicly everything which has an impact on us as individuals, be it love, frustration or political and social developments. We express our thoughts about being a part of this world. About hating all the stupidity that is gathered around us. We kind of try to break free and feel better.
The main concept behind the band is friendship. Somehow we realized, that many people lose themselves after being out of school and going all in different directions, like out of sight out of mind, you know. And then they come together and talk about some shallow stuff and everything is different. We communicate pretty much and still exchange thoughts. We think communication is the most important word for the HC scene.
So far we played over 150 shows, have been on tour 6 times whith shows in luxembourg, italy, slovenja, austria, switzerland, france, belgium, denmark, hungary, czech republic, croatia, slovakia and of course germoney.

COSTA'S CAKE HOUSE -- 555 (CD / Firefly Companies)
Don't be fooled by the name of this German band that might make you expect a different type of music instead of the furious and brutal metalcore CCH present on "555". Everyone into this kind of sound can stop reading this review NOW and buy this album right away, because it's really really cool. After a demo, a split 7", a split MCD as well as two MCDs (the latest one from 2002 called "Lighting up the nightsky" must have gotten your attention as it came as a 3" in a great DVD case) CCH from my hometown Karlsruhe come up with their first full length which is a huge step forward. I already liked "Lighting up the nightsky" a lot, but "555" is another big improvement. Their sound got more straight compared to their older songs, and I think this development suits them very well. CCH aren't just another metalcore unit but quite unique, because apart from the fact that they have two bass players the lyrics are both in English as well as in German. But hey, their singer screams and growls in a way you won't hear any difference, hehe. Another good thing about this release is that the lyrics are printed both in English and in German, because CCH have something to say and want people to know that. The songs are not just full speed ahead or moshing all the time, there are also some very interesting instrumental and more quiet parts with acoustic guitars and a flute. As I said, it's not just one of those typical metalcore albums that you get to hear a lot these days but really worth your attention.

…the brand new COSTAS CAKE HOUSE release ‘555’ on FIRE FLY COMPANIES is definitly on of the highlights in the year 2003! With ‘555’ the German guys have released an album with different styles and also different influences. Your are able to enjoy sometimes heavy and metallic hardcore which is heavier than heavy. They have the devil inside! On the other side the guys of COSTAS CAKE HOUSE are performing experimental ways of hardcore music with strange instruments and an instrumental song on their release ‘555’. The lyrics are all in German so you could partly compare it musically with NARZISS. But it’s more than just metalcore… The vocals are changing from deep roaring into devilish screams but the roaring vocals aren’t my thing! It’s absolutely the best release in the last months! Really damn good…

After several EPs and stuff Germany's metal-(core) hope finally offers their first album with 10 blistering bombs, ready to explode! Before the first song starts a man is speaking about pop music and misery and it's an interlude to think about but CCH immediately prove that they aren't pop music! Brutal guitar riffs, blasting bass and drums sounds and the grunting and screaming voice give you an idea of their rage and anger! With the time I'm getting more and more critically regarding metal-(core) albums and that's why I listened to this album so many times, hours of hours in my car and this piece is getting even better and I like it even more! One reason is that they don't only play classically mosh riffs combined with fast metal parts, of course their music has those elements but it has so much more, it has emotions and feelings and that make them so good, emo-metal-violence! A band with just one guitarist but two bass players should be extraordinary and they are, they mix Arkangel and Carcass riffs with hammering bass and suddenly they play calm breaks with clean chorus lines! And between such metal attacks they added a straight forward mid-tempo hardcore song with harsh vocals. Song No. 9 "Lgen" was already on their last EP "Lighting Up The Night Sky" and luckily they also added it to this album because it's one of the best songs that also has Carcass sounding riffs and there is only one thing you can do: bang your head! The album is full of musical niceties just listen to an ultra-fast metal solo on "A.K.A. Danke Arschloch" or the hellish fast metal riffing on "Ein Spaziergang Im Schatten" or the changing between evil grunting and hopelessly screaming within this song. Needless to say that the record is diversified and affecting...the music is great but the lyrics ? that are only in German - are even better. About daily life, society, love & hate! Metal, Metal, Metal!
