Artist History
Originating in the winter of 2001, The Last Hotel has made a concerted effort towards adding creative vocals to their melodic song-writing in order to set them apart from the local scene in Columbus. With a love of music history and a deep-seeded desire to create something different and fresh, the sound of The Last Hotel is hard to put a finger on and yet still feels immediately familiar. The music has been compared to the likes of John Lennon, Jeff Buckley, Wilco and even T.Rex. Over the past two years, The Last Hotel has shared the stage with such national recording artists as The Mates of State, The Waxwings, Howlin' Maggie, The Minders, Mayday, The Trouble with Sweeney, Mayday and international recording artists, Roller. They are currently pressing & shopping their debut release...a 6-song, self-titled EP and plan to release their CD at Little Brothers in Columbus, Ohio on September 19th, 2003 with Miranda Sound & Orchestraville supporting. |

Live Review: The Last Hotel @ Oldfield's
I've got two big fucking problems with The Last Hotel.
#1. They don't play live enough.
#2. They don't have any CDs for me to listen to over and over again.
Regarding Anger Bullet #1, well, okay. I can understand wanting to space your shows out, leaving your audience craving another performance. OBVIOUSLY IT IS WORKING BOYS AND GIRLS OF LAST HOTEL. Because Jesus, I want to see them right now again. AGAIN AND AGAIN.
The Oldfield's show a few weeks back was only the second time I saw the band, the first being this past summer. It was a long wait. My second check-in to the Hotel did not disappoint.
After a few more shows, I'm sure I'm going to list The Last Hotel as one of the best bands in Columbus, but I need a little more evidence. I need a few more shows to make such a statement.
But that show, man, it was great. The songwriting, both lyrically and musically, in The Last Hotel is incredible. For a band that doesn't play out live that much, they sure don't show it. As a whole unit, The Last Hotel get it right song after song. Adding TS5'er Keith Jenkins to the mix just makes it sweeter. Like I said, I don't really know how the band was without him, so I can't give a fair assesment as to how much he improves the overall sound. But I will say that on that night Mr. Jenkins helped in creating one of the best Columbus shows I've seen this year.
When I was talking to a friend about the band, he asked me to describe them. I basically said it was rock music with melody and beauty. Somewhere in between Travis and Jeff Buckley and Chris Lee. All musicians I love.
I will see The Last Hotel when they play again (April?) and I will probably continue to badger them to play out live more. But until then, I'll take what I can get.
Regarding Anger Bullet #2, word is TLH are working on an EP to be released sometime this year. I guess I can wait. Or maybe I'll bootleg their shows, or secretly stand in the shadows while they practice, lurking, lisening, and stalking what is sure to become one of my new favorite bands of Columbus OH.
