    Artist History
Perhaps it was the stars grouped into the proper alignment, or there was a favorable shift in the cosmos, but after years of hard work, things have finally fallen into place for three Northern Californian musicians. Maurice Spencer, Clint Bear and Chris Hunter wandered in the same circles for quite some time before finally joining forces almost two years ago. Bringing to mind the woeful and expansive sounds of groups like Pink Floyd, Grandaddy, The Flaming Lips, Pavement and The Cure, Bear Hunter is a trio that’s not afraid to experiment with indie rock tenets — and instruments and effects — to create an aesthetic that is decidedly their own.\ The trio may not have been together long, but they are no strangers to the indie rock scene of Northern California. All three members have been playing in a variety of different bands — ranging from bubbly indie pop, to trippy psychedelic improv, to no-nonsense rock and country — that never quite made it to the national spotlight. Chris released a solo album in 1999 called Audiofiction; Clint’s mad rhythmic skills and overwhelming love of music has landed him a slew of jobs as a pick-up drummer; and Maurice is constantly expanding his musical skills, learning to play a wide assortment of instruments in a variety of bands. “I’ve never been exceptionally wonderful at any one instrument,” Maurice says, “so I’ve learned to play two at the same time. Besides, two simple counter-melodies sound better than one complex melody to me.” Chris and Clint actually formed Bear Hunter in the late ‘90s, but it wasn’t until the timely demise of Maurice’s Pixies rip-off band in the summer of 2001 that he, looking to get out from behind the drums and expand his arsenal of instruments, joined the fold. As a trio, things started to fall into place rather quickly for Bear Hunter. They made their debut in the Blue Room Theatre in Chico, CA, as the house band for a rock ‘n’ roll musical titled Hollywood Outsider in September, 2001. Bear Hunter later went forth from the theatre in favor of seedier venues for their brand of sonic expression, hitting the well beaten rock path to bars and clubs, sharing stages with juggernauts of the independent music circuit including Trans Am, Minus the Bear, Old Time Relijun and Kinski. The members of Bear Hunter have also made their way into the studio. So far, they have one release to their credit, the provocatively titled 5 Song EP, an EP consisting of five songs, including “Jim O’Rourke,” of which the band made a video that went on to win Best in Show at CSU Chico’s S.M.A.S.H. (Students in Media Arts Showcase) Awards. If you’re looking for personal information about the band, the details are pretty sketchy. It is said that Clint makes a mean salsa and can fix your car, Chris is the quiet one and Maurice has a bizarre effects pedal fetish. In short, the men of Bear Hunter are an enigmatic bunch. Clint, Chris and Maurice have had their noble countenances immortalized in caricature form by friend and artist Aye Jay of The Gangsta Rap Coloring Book fame, as well as fine artist Zenaida Sango. At a total combined weight of 563 pounds, and the courage and talent to push musical boundaries, Bear Hunter has the muscle and presence not only to throw down, if need be, with any hipster, but assert itself as a force in the indie rock scene. - James Barone Contact (530) 893-5061 or e-mail bearhuntermusic@yahoo.com for further inquiries ###
