Artist History
Suran Song in Stag is a most enigmatic duo, and if you’ve ever seen them live that counts doubly. What’s Suran Song in Stag about? Splicing punk-rock mutant genes with art school sensibilities, and rapidly combining and multiplying them into a core of innovative electric bass and vocals. While they perform “Indie Rock”, SSiS is really a marriage of art and politics. What’s important: lyrics, social politics, visuals and messing with the unnatural order of things. With the songs on “Pure Agitator” and its corresponding live action-art performances, Suran Song in Stag is producing prime examples of punk and art successfully merged. From 1992-1995 Suran Song was performing her slide projection based body art throughout various New York and Los Angeles fine art galleries. In early 1995, she began feeling trapped in an art ghetto created by the art world’s elite market mechanisms. Fleeing the sterile white cube of the gallery context, Suran decided to put the performance art into 3 minute rock songs. In November of 1995 Suran met bassist William Weis and joined with different guitarists and drummers (all of them happened to be male --hence the “in Stag”) to form Suran Song in Stag. The music has evolved since then from a standard rock band into a very concentrated form where the two creators William Weis (electric bass, voice, piano) and Suran Song (action art, lyrics, voice) are the only performers. |

Press Reviews
“In 1973 Patti Smith invited Lenny Kaye on stage to accompany her poems with his scratching and pickings. A decade later Mike Watt and Kira presented their bass duets under the name Dos. Suran Song is a thinking person with feelings and opinions. Suran Song in Stag is William Weis accompanying and fleshing out her vision as did Lenny Kaye with Patti Smith. Suran’s voice weaves the tapestries Kira’s bass did in Dos. Pure Agitator honors the duo’s heroes with the cd’s cover art tipping a hat to The Ex, a Fugazi song from the 1990 LP Repeater, and a grandiose Bowie song from 1972’s Ziggy Stardust LP. The originals kick too! Suran’s melodies and vision draw you in to her extra-bright colored world; William’s bass anchors the vision within the timbre of a single instrument’s sound. Together their chemistry is a sweet elixir to taste.”-Carl Thien, disc jockey WZBC Boston MA |
