Press Reviews
Imagine music and picture small soundtracks for cartoons done by David Lynch. Or maybe Captain Beefheart through a bluegrass filter, as my friend put it. A circus gone bad or a leisure suit lounge on LSD. If you take all these ideas, you might come close to the sound of Lowbelly. They craft songs with a hodge-podge of eclectic instruments, including some homemade contraptions. The Lowbelly tradition started in Boise, Idaho, years ago with Tristan Andreas and Jeremy Miller. The two started a record label (Fort Hazel Magic) and a recording studio (Kashimunji) in their hometown. A lot of freedom grew out of having a label/studio and they began inviting local friends as well as touring rockers to record with them, usually creating an assortment of songs. The first cassette goes from a karaoke-like cover of Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" to a very white, very silly rap song. It features rock and rollers from all over the country (including yours truly) and is packed with more than 20 songs of experimentation and goofiness. But the Lowbelly I saw last night at Chicago's Hideout, is a whole new beast. They are a solid musical entourage (all six of them fitting in a '77 Jeep Wagoneer). The band crafts songs that reach orchestral heights with umpteen instruments. They are all veterans and know their way around the instruments, whether it is a toy piano, an upright bass, a clarinet, a banjo, an accordion or the thing they pulled out of a bag that looked like stuff from the closet all taped together. I even witnessed some jamming triangle, believe it or not. Whatever is put in front of them, Lowbelly will squeeze some interesting sounds out of it. And if you combine that with their immense songwriting talents and even bigger imaginations, you have a wonderful musical experience guaranteed to amaze, delight, intrigue and entertain.-Joe Sepi, Hardroad.comThe concert ended with Lowbelly, who is easilybecoming one of the most talked about bands in Boise. Close your eyes and dream of aFellini film on mescaline. That description only begins to describe the multi-culturalsound this newer Boise band produces. Lowbelly?s six members emit a Hookah joyride, blendinga clarinet, clappers and keyboards with an upright bass, banjo, a ?beer-bonglooking thing? and an accordion. But wait, there is more?so much more ? Band members switch around among even more instrumentsthan can be named here. They pick, pluck, strum, beat and blow an experiencethat can only be explained and enjoyed up close and personal. The written word doesnot do Lowbelly justice. It?s rumored that the band has a brilliant demo tape?but byall means you should see them live. By the time Lowbelly came on, there wasn?t much roomleft in The Sotano. Mika Belle, Boise Weekl |
