BRASSMUNK BIO October 17, 1998: Deemus of BrassMunk jumps out of a crowd to become the final challenger for a live version of “Eat The Beat”. In front of the crowd of cheering onlookers, he spontaneously spits his venomous rhymes, verbally taking out the two Mcs who battled prior. Crowned weekly champion by Toronto’s hiphop institution, CKLN’s (88.1FM) The Powermove Show, Deemus walks away smiling, knowing he has represented BrassMunk properly, giving his hometown a taste of what’s to come.As Canada fights to make its mark on the international hiphop map, Deemus, Clip, and May19th (the three MCs of BrassMunk), are focusing their efforts on elevating the genre as a whole. “I see a lot of rappers that are just chillin’, saying the same thing over and over again,” explains Deemus. “I want to change hip hop – like Outkast, Tribe – do something different and bring something new to the table.”Agile, the group’s producer is also adamant about BrassMunk’s mission. “In terms of music, hip hop is almost like a second class citizen. It does everything other musics do, but it’s not respected. I want BrassMunk to one day be at the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Music is universal, it shouldn’t matter what type of music you’re doing, if it’s good music, people will feel you.”The group’s moniker was chosen to metaphorically represent their characteristics. “The Brass section of a band has elements of different instruments – trumpet, tuba, trombone – and each of those instruments can stand alone, like we as MCs can hold our own,” says May 19th. “But when we come together it’s like creating a stronger, more complete entity.” The word Munk was chosen since it symbolizes a harmonious, peaceful, and discipline character. “It represents us unifying and learning how to work together,” Deemus states. The family-like closeness among the BrassMunk members is most clearly evident in the structure of their songs. “The way we write our lyrics, they’re interwoven, so it’s almost like one voice,” describes May 19th. “We don’t write the traditional one person per verse. We pop in and out of each other’s verses, which is different to what most people are doing right now. We try to rhyme on conceptual freestyle, so you really have to listen to pick up on it.”The explosive “Feature Presentation” exhibits these lyrical cadences that are signature to the BrassMunk style. The song’s springy production perfectly compliments their interactive rhymes. Inspired by the conventional microphone check, “One, 2” boasts a catchy chorus, tight lyrics and beats that are so hard that the treble gets envious. “Stop Look Listen” a reggae-influenced track, pairs a sinister bassline with the emcee’s ferocious freestyle skills. And since elevating hip hop remains at the core of BrassMunk’s motives, May 19th’s rhymes sum up the group’s intent: “We get live with the lyrical, make you feel hysterical/Non-typical divine being, surpassing every pinnacle.” |
