3 Song Demo CD (recorded 12/98)
Reviewer: Joel Simches
This newly formed Boston band, comprised of songwriter/guitarist Matt McCarthy, lead guitarist Mike Grabowski, bassist Mike Sansoucy and drummer Nathan Wood tries really hard to please with this three-song demo. This is definitely a songwriter's pop band, melding clever hooks and tight harmonies with storyteller words and melodies. If you are into bands like Ramona Silver, Scatterfield, Ben Folds Five, Goo Goo Dolls and Lemonheads, then this band shall rock your little world. To my ears, this band sounds like Bob Mould, if he were the lead singer for Ramona Silver. It's kinda hard to pick out a standout song from the three presented here, because first of all a three song demo is likely to have the three best songs a band could do, and second of all because all three of them are great pop songs in their own right. I would love to hear these guys on a finished full length, possibly produced at Zippah by Pete Weiss or at Wooly Mammonth with Sir David Minehan. Not that the production on this CD is bad, but the band's true pop potential could be greatly enhanced by either of these talented producers. If you're a lover of good pop, this is a band that you'll want to check out.
Song: Dead Reviewer: Doug Cornell, Someone Else's Problem

This song asks a question that few have the guts to ask. "What would you do if you thought that I was dead? Would you pick up the pieces of what you thought you had left?" I know I don't want some guy marrying my wife and taking my place around here. Carol has explicit instructions to give my '62 Melody Maker to my son. No one else can have it and I
mean it.
"Dead" begins with a bass plumping along slowly. Mike Grabowski's guitar is pleasantly understated and the vocals by Matt McCarthy start out sounding rather normal before suddenly bursting into a Weezer meets the Lemonheads sing-along chorus that will keep you humming for days. I admit that Weezer is one of my guilty pleasures and I never understood why they were panned in the press. If "Dead" is any example, then Playing for Audrey aren't as silly as Weezer, but have all of the instrumental and vocal chops that make bands like Weezer popular. Effective use of dynamics (I like the stop-start-stop guitar) and professional production make "Dead" hard not to like. I'd rather hear this on the local "alternative" radio station than 99% of the other crap they play.
