Artist History
Tampa - the jewel of Florida. One can find a myriad of inspirational sources in this great city. Its heritage is steeped with historical significance. From pirate invasions to cigar making, Tampa is truly a place like no other. Hankshaw was borne of these surroundings, and it shows in the impeccable attention to detail that the band displays in their compositions. There is no good explanation as to how these five minstrels found each other. Maybe the planets aligned a certain way, or maybe it was simply serendipitous good-fortune. How it happened is irrelevant. What is important is the music they create, and the impact that it has had on their community. Three years ago, the Stor-Ette on 50th street was a warehouse/storage facility no different from the scores of others in the world. Row upon row of cold and heartless aluminum units were the only scenery at Stor-Ette, offering little in the way of creative stimulation. That all changed when the Hankshaw boys moved in. Drawn by a strange, possibly cylindrical presence, people started congregating around unit 53. Other bands’ practice schedules became disrupted, and work that peoples’ livelihoods depended upon became secondary to spending the evening with these five visionaries. Soon, Stor-Ette was thriving with creative output. It is now home to some of Tampa’s most important artists. Some would argue that Hankshaw had nothing to do with this. These nay sayers would have you believe that it was Stor-Ette’s close proximity to Tampa’s Seminole Heights district, a well known artists’ haven, that caused the creative migration to the blue warehouses. Believe what you will, but drive by the Stor-Ette on any given Tuesday or Thursday night and look at the cars outside of unit 53 before you form an opinion on the matter. Listen to the joyous laughter and glorious music that emanates from Hankshaw’s space. You’ll be hard pressed to believe that anything other than Hankshaw’s patronage created this unity. Hankshaw and the patrons of Stor-Ette are indeed each other’s muse. |
