Press Reviews
Review of "Pulse" by New Age Voice Magazine, August 2001
"Looking for a great CD for dancing or more active environments? Positively Dark has a great mix of keyboards, synths, drums and voices to pick up the pace or perk up a person's attitude. In spite of the title, I don't find it dark at all, not in terms of depressing. The term dark in this context probably relates more to Robert Rich's use of the term when he used to refer to his work as dark ambient. A better way to think of it might be as introspective, as the great womb where creativity comes from, the void. Sort of like deep space music, except with a more lively foreground, featuring melodies dancing and a background that seems to constantly evolve, compared to the wash of angelic choirs or solar winds that are found in most space music. Positively Dark has its quiet moments as well as its upbeat ones, and Pulse's explorations of the dark have yielded quite a lode of intriguing music interludes. It seems to be quite fertile ground for the imagination. Listen and see if you don't get the impression that titles like "Steal," "Assassins," "Ocean Run," and "In Your Arms," suggest themes that could easily be scores for sci-fi, action or romance films. Invigorating listening that can travel with you in your car until you get your own space shuttle, or maybe just a journey in a post-apocalyptic future." |
