Artist History
A new approach to life has entered the mind of Christopher Gino Dean. Perhaps a weak one at that, but nevertheless, new means better.
"Life's too short" wouldn't describe it. It's more of a laid back type of thing.
Dean wanted to make a record that portrayed who he is and who God is all in the same album. He set up his second generation of Messy Music Studio (mostly the same equipment he used to record Too Cold For Penguins) and let it sit there for months, recording when he felt like it and then sending the songs off to Danny Maland, an old producer, bandmate and good friend, who mixed and mastered the recordings.
"I'm always looking for a way to put God in a box. But the more I come to think of it, trying to contain the One who created some of the most amazing sites I've ever seen is unimaginable. I just wanted to leave it open, see what God wanted out of me."
Things began to shape up for Dean in his basement and life as the record took shape. Some of the songs he brought out of the archives, some songs he wrote and recorded in the same week. But what came out of it is a work that he really thinks meets his goals.
"It's not overproduced. It's not a perfect recording. But I'm not a perfect person. Every aspect of the recording is me."
Literally, that is true. Dean performed all tracks, including the keyboards, drums, guitar, vocals, and djimbe.
"I'm not against the bass guitar, I just felt like I didn't need one in my recording. It makes the recording raw, not quite full."
Songs on the new album, titled Contain focus on a two main themes that Dean has been working with.
Half of the album, including the songs, "Ski The Alps," "Count Infinity," "Forever Is Forever," "When the Birds Look So Confused" and the title track focus on the beauty of God, and how it's everywhere but hard to see.
The rest of the album portray the struggle to see the beauty through the different aspects of life. "Sometimes I need to step back and take a look at where I'm going. The song 'Answer' deals with how much trouble I was having just being busy by trying to go to school, trying to be a worship leader, trying to be in a healthy relationship and trying to record and still have time to sit down with God, refocus and say "thank You."
Outside of music, Dean will finish up his BS in mass communication from the University of Utah in December. "Who knows where I'll be after that. I love change. I'm excited to see where God will throw me." |
