Artist History
Kendrick Jacocks’ first appearance in opera was as Robbins in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, presented by Opera Memphis in the beautifully restored Orpheum Theatre. The then nineteen year old remained associated with that company for four years singing in the chorus and comprimario roles such as the messenger in Aida. He also appeared in operetta where critics praised his performance of Sid El Kar in the The Desert Song. In 1993, the tenor went to the University of Illinois to study with renowned mezzo-soprano Mignon Dunn. While studying, he toured as leading tenor with the Illnois Opera Theater singing such operas as Puccini’s La Boheme, Rigoletto, Faust, and Floyd’s Susannah. Mr. Jacocks stepped in on short notice to perform the tenor solo Karl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the excellent Champaign-Urbana Symphony conducted by Maestro Paul Vermel. His performance drew kudos from the critics and bravos from the audience:
"Mr Jacocks infused this brief role with theatrics and fine voice" The News Gazette.
Later that year he debuted with Ian Hobson’s Sinfonia da Camera in Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos in the role of Scaramuccio. In Berlin he appeared with the Hungarian National Symphony as tenor soloist in Carmina Burana, (again on short notice) and in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Some other roles include Alfredo in Traviata, Luigi in Puccini’s Il Tabarro, Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem, and Verdi’s Otello and Radames in Aida. He graduated cum laude from University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana in 1996 and received a Master of Music in 1999.
In 2000, he founded and served as artistic director of the Chattanooga State Opera where he produced and directed a successful La Boheme.
Kendrick now lives in New York City and studies with Charles Riecker
