- an introduction to Lovedrug -
Like many great bands, there is something hauntingly spiritual and honest about Lovedrug. The Ohio-based rock band musically delivers highbrow pop art akin to Mercury Rev, early Radiohead or Sunny Day Real Estate, crossed with the pop sensibilities of Third Eye Blind and the arena grandeur of Queen. Lyrically, Lovedrug reveals a writer wrestling with the demons that face us all, winning and losing all at once.
Only those who have seen the band live can truly understand the growing phenomenon that is the Lovedrug. Lovedrug live is less a show and more an experience, however clichéd that may be, and in sixteen short months, Lovedrug has gone from start-up to standout on the mid-western indie scene. With damn near 100 shows under their belts, Lovedrug have won over virtually every audience they’ve played for, including some of the more sophisticated. The band has shared stage with Cat Power, Creeper Lagoon, Elliot, Twothirtyeight, The Casket Lottery, Four Way Street, Small Brown Bike and other, leaving a lasting impression wherever they go.
Formed in June of 2002, Lovedrug is the brainchild of Michael Shepard and Adam Ladd, artists of some pedigree with several previous avant-garde projects, including the widely respected “Kerith Ravine.” Rising from the ashes of Kerith and other similar emo projects, Shepard’s current lyrics and melodies are a striking mixture of progressive art with a commercial appeal, a unique crossbreed of art and accessibility. Ladd in turn keeps the project’s direction securely moored to the rhythmic foundation his bass, while providing quality musical arrangement and direction to Shepard’s guitar and piano innovations.
Longtime friend but first-time collaborator Dave Owen became Lovedrug’s full-time lead guitarist in July 2003, replacing the parting Matt Bentley and bringing his own accomplished creative presence to both the band’s writing and performance. Jonathon Bucklew completes the band’s current lineup as the drummer.
Lovedrug first began recording in June 2002, selling out the first pressing of their 5-track demo within 3 months of its July release. This phenomenal level of interest and acceptance led to more serious demo making and what would eventually be pre-production in pursuit of a full-length album. Early 2003 saw the band head into the “real” studio with producer Tim Patalan (Sponge, The Fags, Peter Searcy) to astounding results.
Those lucky enough to have heard the band’s full album are prone to use words like “brilliant” and “amazing” excessively. The truth be told, few bands ever generate the amount of “buzz” currently surrounding Lovedrug, particularly in such a short amount of time. The band has just released the 6-track “Rock n’ Roll EP” featuring at least 2 songs from the upcoming record and several b-sides. As Lovedrug navigates a rapidly growing level of interest from major record companies, the band plans to hit the road to lay the foundation for the release of their full record in early 2004. Catch them wherever you can.
