Artist History
Treading that fine line between indie and what
could be the new mainstream, Philadelphia-based
Starter Culture has spent the last two years
refining their textured sound. Originally billed
as Pale Blue, at times this 5-piece is reminiscent
of Bends-era Radiohead, at others they present
influences from bands like The Verve and The
Smiths. Their distinctive yet contagious sound
starts on the lips of Sanna, adding a new
dynamic to this style of music. Anchored with
the desire to create a huge and potent quality
in the music, the rhythm section of D$ and his
big bottom drum grooves, and Juice laying down
solid and melodic bass lines hits you in the
chest like a sledgehammer. Jiggs' unique guitar
style switches between warm chord tones and his
own brand of noise making. "The band blends a
lot of different mod/pop styles in their
uniquely fused alt sound..." writes local
promoter Ed Jones of Budzilla Productions.
"Fronted by super sexy Sanna and anchored by
really tight rhythms, Pale Blue offers a high
energy, can't sit down live set..." In April 2002,
Pale Blue released their first studio recording,
a five song EP of original music entitled
"Five Faces." The band spread their wings,
organizing and playing numerous benefits.
The band's song "Little Too Late," recorded live
during an acoustic performance in September 2001,
made it into Mp3's national top 20 and garnered
great praise from online listeners. In the spring
of 2003, the band released their second EP "Check
Your Local Listings," which displays a band coming
into their own and defining a rawness and edge
they had not experimented with. By continuing to
publicize their name and aggressively promoting
their music, Pale Blue has developed and
maintained a high profile in the Philly music
underground. In June of 2003, the band changed
its name to Starter Culture and decreased its
line-up by one guitarist. The band is continuing
to write, record and gig while searching for a
permanent fifth member. |
