bjorn means bear
Putting the Muse Back in Music
The band bjorn means bear was born in March 2000
at the corner of Franklin and Wilton in Hollywood, California.
Icelandic singer/songwriter Bjorn Baldvinsson was crossing the street with a
guitar on his back, heading to his studio, when Delphine, a keyboard player
transplanted from her native France, walked up behind him and asked, smilingly,
if he was a musician. Bjorn had been searching for a new project and had a
feeling things might just be falling into place. They swapped numbers and that
very weekend wrote a song together and recorded it in Delphine’s home studio.
The results were mesmerizing. Soon, Delphine had recorded a dozen of Bjorn’s
songs, arranging them simply with magical orchestrations.
The search for a drummer ended quite distinctly with Martha Moore, who’d
picked up the sticks a few years earlier and surprised everyone, especially her
husband, producer/guitarist Goffrey Moore.
One day Martha dragged him to a rehearsal, with him swearing up and down that
he wasn’t getting involved in any new band projects. Luckily, there was a
second guitar at the studio and that rehearsal lasted six hours. Not long after,
Goffrey’s enthusiasm convinced has bass-playing friend, Darren Embry, to
“come around”.
In 2002, bjorn means bear was selected by Claire Sturgess, one of London’s
premiere djs, to be featured as an unsigned artist on the XFM show, “The Works”.
The jammy art-rock quintet,
offers a trippy atmospheric palette
with a pop sensibility, and feels a lot
like a young Pink Floyd.
“We really like each other,” Bjorn says, “and that’s the most important
thing. We like hanging out and playing music. There are no egos here, except for
mine, and I’m in therapy. I swear.”
