BANDS PLOW HARD GROUND (By Teresa Gubbins, Staff Writer)
Big record labels write off the end of the year as a bad
time to release new records. But these mostly local
musicians with new discs aren't intimidated:
In Need Of A Prayer
Tragic Hero is neither courageous nor stupid, says
singer-guitarist Erich von Colberg. "We are what we are, and
I think it's stupid to go ahead and try to be what everybody
else is being," he says.
This kind of music is usually known as "big-hair rock." The
band's new disc, Wing and a Prayer, may not be a Bon Jovi
song, but it sure sounds like one. The songs are a
combination of rip-roaring rockers and soft ballads. The
guitar can be achingly simple, and vocalist Chuck Williams
sounds like Kiss' Paul Stanley.
But these are four seasoned musicians who are trying to
break out of the cover-band routine in the only way they
know: by writing and recording their own songs.
Mr. von Colberg knows that the audience for this kind of
music is shrinking every day, but who couldn't appreciate
the humorous, hacking-cough close of the song Cigarettes and
Rock & Roll?
"We're not trying to please an '80s rock crowd," he says.
"We could do the trendy thing, and that could be good for
now, but then it goes away. We're playing what we like to
play and hopefully some other people will like it, too." |
